With the ever growing urban sprawl and the fact that the county probably sees it as a nuisance, it was only a matter of time. People move in next to an NHRA 1/4 mile track then invariably start to bitch and complain about the noise.

Same thing happens in Denmark.. We don't have any drag strips, but motocross tracks and the few racetracks we have have less and less track time due to noise complaints etc..

I Think these lame assss people that live by englishtown make more noise than the cars at the track.

I can only imagine what pressure the city council was put under to get rid of that track.

I see they want to keep the swap meets going. The swap meets are big money for etown. $100 a space for selling and I believe $12 a person to get in the door. But these swap meets have gone down hill every year. The worst one was this past fall. Given that the weather was not so good. The place is full of JUNK.

I sold last spring and I decided to stay over. That place is a ZOO at night time. It felt like I got 15 minutes of sleep. It seemed like big time under age drinking. I did use the word ZOO but I think the ZOO is more tame.

So sad to see it go. Many fond memories and met many good people there, some to who I'm still goood friends with. It sucks that the people who moved nearby ruined it for the people who used the track and had fun. To be honest i have no need to go there anymore, that includes the swapmeets too. A huge dissapointment all around. Too bad my kids will never get that adreanline rush waiting for that green light and making a pass down the 1/4 mile and getting a time slip. The fun days are over and all I have is my stories.

I have never been, not in my neck of the woods, but hate to hear of any track closing......they all are fun. Some are better, prettier, more amenities, but they all provide a safer place than the streets for us to have fun.

We are blessed in our area, Norwalk is only 45 mins away, they are dropping money and putting in a new surface, 42 is about the same distance, it was closed for a complete overhaul and I think they did a nice job, not sure how many millions they put in to it., we have a track in mt vernon, marion, columbus, quaker city is also not to far, and a little farther is some in ciny. They planned to put one in mansfield, they had a full concrete oval that the nascar trucks raced on, when they put all that concrete in, they had to drain it, the new drag strip was going to go over this drainage ditch till the epa stepped in and called it a wildlife stream. ......so it'd laid out and started a rough cut for its location and now nothing.......

Bottom line it's a total of the sums that most tracks that close do, it's rarely just 1 thing, but support for the remaining will help, who knows maybe it will be.like 42, closed a few years and come back redone better than ever

I lived and worked 3 miles from the PARK half of my life and remember going there over a 100 times to both race and explore the swap meets.
so sad I wonder if they are closing the Englishtown Auction which is a mile down the road from the track??

Bill, I believe the flea market is safe. I have not been to it in a few years. It has changed a bunch. I am think about going to it when the weather gets better.

Doo Wop Where were you in '62?

The track area was sold for 5 million. Hard to say no.

Nothing sold. The Napp family retains ownership of the entire property and use of the "stadium portion" of the dragstrip for concerts, monster trucks, etc. and leased the rest of the strip to Copart for junk car storage, at 5 million per year for 15 years. They're going to continue to run the motocross, road course, go-carts, and drifting, as well as continuing to run the onsite airport. In other words, they're dumping the only thing on the property that matters, the thing that gave them their start and got them to where they are today...rich.

C'mon Doug, your 65 would be a hit on the drifting course!

I'm still in shock about their closing. E-town has always been a world-class track. I thought it would be there forever.
Back in the 1980's, they spent a fortune to build a huge wall to help contain the sound from reaching their Nimby neighbors. Just one example of the constant improvements they've done to the track.
I've been going there for decades, had lots of great times and made some great memories. Sad to see it go.
At least we still have (for now) Atco, Maple Grove and Island in our area.

The swap meet --- for Spring, anyway --- is still going on.....
All of the people in the airport (or Blue) Field will be relocated into the parking (or Red) Field or into some section of grass
that they are now designating for "overflow" swap meet area.... (Remains to be seen -- how that will be roped off)....
    If anyone has any questions, Englishtown's phone number is 732 - 446 - 7800.
See ya' in April -- spot RI 23 -- behind P.C. Richard's trailer --- some AWESOME Buick parts from the 1930s through the 1970s........

Dude...they will NEVER open a drag strip on LI......ever. Why do you think every track on LI closed in he first place? LI has gotten too congested and real estate is through the roof here. Not to mention the sky high, obscene taxes. No one is going to want to live next to it paying 15k in taxes every year. And I will guarantee you that every person that moves in next to it will complain about it even thought they knew full well it was there when they bought. I wont get into what I think of the majority of the "Richards" that live and run this state. I hate this state. Its a sinkhole. I cant wait to get the ---- out of here. There's a word for places like this.

Maybe after they rake in 5 million a year for car storage for a 15 years they can re-do the track and open back up. Yeah....right....most of us will be gone....

I am not renewing my spaces. They sent me a renewal sheet the other day. They say if your spaces are not on the map than to circle where you want. The paved spaces are very limited. So it will be next to impossible to get one of those spots. As far as the grass spots go. Those spots might just become a big mud pit if it rains. Plus I am not sure if I want to support them after they sold out to a company that wants to fill it up with used cars. I am not even sure if I want to go as a buyer. They raise the price to get in to 12 dollars. I am supposed to still pay 12 dollars for a swap meet that is so much smaller than it was. They are crazy.
