    I have a 1241735 block with a BIE stamp

    Does the BIE stamp represent service replacement block for every year?

    For a 1971 Replacement it would read BIE
    B=Buick
    I = Year so the I is probably 1 for 71
    E = Plant
    So for a 1970 replacement it would read BOE then sequence #

    But isn't the casting # 1241735 for a 72-74 block?

    Yes, it would be the casting number for the factory replacement block.

    Supposedly the casting # 1241735 was for a 72-74 engine shouldn't my engine have B2E instead of B1E?

    Good question. I just don't know. My casting number 1238861 is for 70-71 engines.

    Back to my previous questions. Can anyone help me out.

    Recently found the casting # on the heads, #1231786. Can anyone tell me anything about the heads? They are from 1970-71.

    I also have a question on my transmission. I do not believe that it is original. The code tag on the passenger side has been removed and I located the partial VIN on the drivers side just above the pan. The VIN # is H2T05566, can anyone tell me what the VIN means, or if I can confirm what it came from?
    Is this what the numbers are
    H = Type - What type? Buick
    2 = Year so 1972 - I think this stands for the year
    T = Month, December
    05 = Day of Month
    Can anyone confirm?

    1231786? Should be 1231738 for 70-71. Look here:
    http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/bigblock_casting_numbers.html
    The vin derivative on the originally installed trans from GM for you would be:
    4 (Buick)
    1 (for 71)
    Z (Fremont assembly plant)
    then the next six digits should match the vin numbers you read through your windshield.
    Should look something like this: 41Z100001

    So what would my transmission be from?

    I have no clue. Post a clear picture of the stampings instead of telling us what you think it is, then maybe we can help.

    Picture of the Transmission VIN # is on page 1.

    Maybe a factory replacement trans too?

    For instance, my 71 has the vehicle vin derivative 41H103948 stamped on BOTH the engine block and trans. The car's vin is 434671H103948

    71 only.

    thepartsman Back Ordered Again ?

    Out of my library:

    1231786 = Cylinder HD cast number for 1970
    1231738 = Block cast number for 1970 and early 1971
    1238861 = Block cast number for late 71 and early 72
    1241735 = Block cast number for late 72 , all 73, 74 & 75

    The TH400 vin number probably should read 2H105566 instead of H2T05566.
    if you check some of the factory stamp dates you will find that the "1" was stamped upside down.
    Case in point some of your 71-72 fenders are stamped with a part number ID and below it is a
    "TO" which is actually a "10".
    To answer your question "H" what Buick is this?, there was not an H platform until the Skyhawk was introduced
    in the mid 70s. In this case the "H" represents Flint.
    H = Flint
    2 = 1972
    105566 = VIN the car came out of.

    OR

    If it was 2H105566 it would read

    2 = Oldsmobile
    H = Flint
    105566 = VIN

    Hope this helps with your questions.

    I am pretty sure I had at least one 71 Stage 1 replacement short block still in the factory crate that used the 1241735 casting.
