No not crabs or jock itch! Really wanting to get another car. Really dont have money for another car and probably have to trade something I gots for what I wants. Other than a Wildcat Vert, I've been thinking about another AMX. I had one of these from 87 - 89. Wife (GF then) blew up the factory 304 and another 360 driving it hot before I put a old aluminum 300 in it. Chopped it up pretty good doing it but I didnt really know better back then. Come to find out there was only 3000 of these cars made. Had a shot at one last month for $4000 that had been in a barn for the last 20 yrs. procrastinated a little to long and it got sold.
Just when you think you’ve satisfied that itch, another itch comes along (“It’d sure look good on 17 inch wheels...”maybe a subframe would let an LS work under the hood...”a 3:42 posi would make this thing a real blast to drive...”). Of course, that’s if you just get the base model (Hornet, wasn’t it?). Otherwise, it’s gonna be “gotta make this thing PERFECT”!!! I wish you well on this journey, my brother...
I know what you mean, Briz. I've got that same itch lately. I haven't owned a 4 speed car in a long time and I feel like I really need one again. I've got a line on a `65 El Camino that I'm thinking about buying and putting current driveline out of my Buick in (406 Chevy, 200-4R and 4.10 geared 12 bolt), then putting one of my 350 Buick engines and a 4 speed in my Buick. Trouble is, the El Camino, although affordable, sounds like it needs more work than I have time for. I have a complete 4 speed setup with a cast iron case Super T-10, 2.64 1st gear, ready to go in something. I've even got a freshly resurfaced 350 Buick flywheel for it. Either all this or buy another car with a 4 speed to drive or one to put my 4 speed in and leave my Buick alone for now. Decisions, decisions. But if you want an AMC you should buy an AMC. They were actually really good cars, just didn't have the styling to complete with the big 3 and they went down because of it.
when you said AMX this is what I thought of I forgot about those later Hornet/Spirit /Amx what years were they ? late 70s to early 80s ? AMC was struggling to survive by those years, I bought a 86 Jeep cj7 new the last year before Chrysler bought the name from AMC and years of decline under the mopar flag It was a good rig. I always like AMC quirky outside the box styling
Got the itch also, but what I want seems to exceed my discretionary funds. Had a couple of deals fall though, or get stretch out so may miss out on what I would like to purchase. That's life.
When I was in the service 78-82 I had a 68 Javelin and just after I got out a 69 AMX. Both had really faulty electrical systems. Can remember several times smoke rolling out from under the dash as I was driving down the road from wires frying. The 290 in the Jav burned 4 qts of oil per tank.
Amc was heading for the tank as it just didn't quite have a handle on retail Joe public . Mopar wasn't interested long term in the amc brand . They wanted that jeep demographic .
I always have the itch to buy/rescue another vehicle. What's currently stopping me is the fact that we are out of room.
again.....my itch never goes away....the list of cures for my itch is very very long. Those Hornet's remind me so much of our GM Torana's here of the same years. We had em in both 2 door and 4 door, but the 2 door was close to a hornet. Here's an interesting fact, our most sought after mythical unicorn car is either a For GTHO Phase 3 from 1970-1971 of the amazing Torana A9X hatch from mid 70's. They look awesome
ive had a couple dozen 2 seaters and Javelins, a RWB Rebel Machine, and a rough scrambler...a few Spirit AMXs and my absolute favorite was a Hornet AMX..just loved that car...was orange and a 4 speed...miss it a lot...loved it....
