1963 401 nailhead marine

    are they the same as car engines. they are rated at 280 horse power at 4400rpm.

    the man said one was clockwise the other was counter clockwise. I will have to check them out.they still have the gray marine manafolds on them.

    went and took a look at the engines. one is together the other had the heads off. it had a hole in one piston. it has 30 over pistons in it stamped on top of pistons. the piston only had a small hole in the center of it. they are complete marine engines.4bl carb and intakes. they have been in storage inside for a long time. the head number is 1196914, model number is 48ch280.if anybody can help me figure out what the are. there was another number 1363782. thanks bob

    May I ask what the concern is with whether or not they are the same as car engines?
    I generally don't put effort into looking things up for people, the internet is a wonderful resource if you are willing to put the time into it.
    Is there a concern for the factory power rating?
    Generally speaking, marine engines have specific accessories that can be swapped for car compatible ones or very minor machining and casting differences.

    The ones I have seen are definitely just car engines other than the typical marine manifolds and accessories. Chances are good that there is more $$$ worth of manual trans flywheels than you can reel these in for if the seller does not care about them. Most I have seen were 425,but don't take that as the gospel. If the price is right,and you get lucky....they are both .030 and rotation means nothing other than a cam change and distributor gear.

    I was thinking of buying them to save them. I would sell them if somebody wants them.

    I am sorry I did not mean to advertise them at this time for sale. I did buy them and when I get them and check them out I will post them.

    j got the motors home,i will check the numbers, they are not reverse rotation, the transmissions does that. they also drive off the front of the motors. I will update later .

    i checked my parts book and could not find the intake number 1363782 it listed 1363783. the number on the heads where 1196914 and the block was 1364705. they are both 4 barrel engines, that are suppose to be 1963 401 engines. could use some help please . thanks

    Oh, OK...the block casting number you listed is a 401 block. If it was a 425 block the last three numbers in the casting number would be " 704 " The head casting number is consistent with what I generally find on mid `60`s Buicks. The heads are the same for 401 and 425 motors.
    I am a Century boat owner and am fairly familiar with the Gray Marine offerings in that product. As far as I know, Buick did not produce a 425 engine for marine purposes. Buick did the V6 and V8 401 engines in varying horsepowers. I have mid-sixties Century boat catalogs and in `65 the highest H.P. engine Buick produced, to be marketed thru Gray Marine, was a 280 H.P. engine. Interesting to note that Buick included several pages in the `66 car owners manuals devoted to their marine engines. This is consistent with what appears to be your mid sixties casting numbers.
    Where did you get your model number which you listed earlier in this thread? Is there a decal on one of the valve covers? A picture would help us help you.
    Also, there may be stampings on the front of the engine just in front of the lifter valley cover, on the same surface that the valley cover mounts to. Again, a picture would help us help you.

    thanks tom, that model number was on a tag on the rear bell housing mount. the number on front of block is cml v 338 . the motors have Mallory distributors. they also had outside oil coolers and filters with no drain on pan. I want to find out what they are and if they would be any use for a car. thanks again bob

    Growing up on the coast,,, I would see one occasionally ... what stood out to me was that they all had a fairly hot cam.... other than that the difference was the marine exhaust manifolds... 4 bbl carbs,,, and engine mounts and trans V drive set up.... they were impressive....

    i checked the engines and one is reverse rotation. I took valley pan off one of them and it is real clean. I am waiting for the guy to send the paperwork on the motors when they were rebuilt.

    i got the paper work on the engines. one was rebuilt in 1996 and the guy that did it marked it on the top of number one piston. that is the one that has a small hole in a piston. the other one was built in 1996.they both have cast iron oil pans. they have no front covers. I do not know if they were built 9to1 compression or 10.25 to 1. the shop where they were done is closed due to the man has died. these motors are real clean so you can still read the part number on the piston along the .30 size. I am going to do more checking .
