    Hey Buick freinds

today I got to see my first hellcat, the 707HP Charger. Great looking vehicle and I used to have an SRT8 Charger.

Long story short we go at it from a roll from 20ish up to 80 ish and lets say he was very shocked he didn't pull away. He did creap forward but at a much slower pace than he expected...:)

    Viva La Buick!

A Hellcat makes about 660 RWHP stock with curb weight of 4439 pounds.

Used to think my mid 11 sec street Buick was pretty fast. But with some of the absolutely crazy horsepower numbers I'm seeing with new cars my street car doesn't seem quick anymore. Can a healthy 550 - 650 hp Buick beat a Hellcat ? I'll continue to take my car to the track now and then, but it's been awhile and I'm thinking being competitive is getting harder all the time. How do our older cars do against new cars with a lot more horsepower ? John.

One thing I will give these new cars is drivability and features to go with the performance. You can drive cross country, idle in hot traffic, and get 22 MPG or more sitting in your heated and cooled seats. My old Dart ran 11's but it wasn't very streetable. My nailheads are good cruisers but they're just not that quick. Still love'em though! By the way I wouldn't have been shocked, I know these Buick's can run!!

Guys... I'm very happy with my set up, its been 8 years since my 556 HP build and this engine and set up has needed very little tuning since day1. Just some Holley float bowl work due to some float sticking, other than that and changing oil and plugs every other year.... literally NOTHING else. have not adjusted the idle or idle screws or jets or timing... Nada... nothing....

I was VERY proud how my 1970 Buick with old school 455 (yes... it has aluminum heads)... but other than that this build is based off of 40~year old technology!!!... Block, intake, Cam, Holley carb... etc....

And.... I gave a 707HP Modern Supercar/Musclecar a run for the money!!!! ... a vehicle with a supercharger, computer controlled, fuel injection and tuned for efficiency....

With a roller cam.... I would have won! but when I built mine buick roller cam's were still in the infancy stage

    VinMan out...

Just add boost, it can turn an old car into a beast.

Yes, I have thought about the addition of a supercharger. The problem is ( as I understand it ) our old production blocks won't really hold up to a lot of boost. And not everybody can plop down 5k for a new aluminum TA block. It's true though, drivability with 707 hp is a great thing. I think for some of us it leaves us only to discretely lighten up our heavy cars. So to even things up a bit. :)

The data is more organized for 13-14 Gt500s. But here are some results to get a frame of reference. Hellcats are around the same times. Of note, the A8 auto trans, paddle shifting, Hellcats beat the M8 manual trans Hellcats by about 2 to 3 tenths. I recall seeing times slips in the high 10s for A8 Hellcats with just slicks added. As you can see from the 60' times, both Hellcats and GT500s are limited by lack of rear tire grip. But, their power to weight ratio is 5.8 to 1. I remember when 10 to 1 was super.

I also doubt he has 60K in it (Hellcat cost), 150K plus for the modified Caddy, or 55K+ for the GT500 Mustang...

So Vinman is doing ok, driving his slightly modified 50 year old iron and keeping up with the deep pocket boys.

Speed costs, how fast do you want to go.. more relevant today that ever.

    SOOOOOO True!!!

I have my 2007 GT500 Shelby that I love, but somehow it's just not the same. It has 500 HP stock and around 650 HP as of this spring and it's a total blast to drive, but being a true "gearhead", I need that old iron wrapped around me to feel completely "at home". Although I'll keep the Shelby around for a while to play with, I really can't wait to get my Tomahawk built and dropped into some old Buick iron and have some real FUN!!!

I sincerely believe that the camaraderie among Buick people is the biggest part of the attraction towards the old Buick iron vs. new factory hot rods. The new cars are great, but you just can't duplicate that bond!!!

I love the heck out of all the Buicks I have owned, as well as all the old muscle in general. I bought a six speed Challenger Hellcat new in July of 2015. That car was so so good at so many things. It would put me in the seat at any speed, get loose at will and keep me cool in the desert heat. The technology is what makes these cars so great. I picked the car up in Kansas and drove 850 miles home in a day and got 20 mpg at 85 mph. The car was as stable at 175 as it was at 85. That's ws impressed me the most. There will always be someone who is faster, we all know that. Bang for the buck, the Hellcat's are a great deal. A job change required me to part with the hellcat, but I'm full steam ahead on my Stage 1 resto. I can't wait to ruin people's day in an "old car' again!
