Hi, I am trying to decode the trim tag on my 68 GS 400 Convertible. Any help you guys can give me is greatly appreciated. Thanks Ryan. 06A 0304 ST 68-44667KAN 234 Body TR 172B D-1 Paint
06A= Built first week June 1968 4= Buick 46 = GS 67 = convert Kan= Built Kansas City plant 234 -= Fisher Bodt Sequence number D-1 = Blue Mist with a white covert top TR 172B = white vinyl bucket seats If there was a 370 hp engine that year I am unaware of it. That would be as much as a stage 70 455. Also I am unaware of a stripe like that from the factory which means nothing. There are many 68 experts on the Board and I am not one.
Did your father have a dealer installed Stage 1 package put on the car? That would be the only performance option that I could think of. Does your car have the original factory stripes or have they been replaced at one time? If they are original, could measure the width of each stripe and the space between them for me? :beer
I do believe they are original. He knew the car's history when he baught it from the previous owner. It hasn't been repainted just had some body work started and not finished. On the hood you can see the black primer under the paint as the paint is faded. I will measure the stripe and the gaps tomorrow for you. Thanks for the info guys. I am trying to get info on the dealer stage package that could have been added from the dealer. So far all I have is one gentleman that is trying to dig some paper work for me.
Blue Mist 68 convert with a white top! My favorite (see avatar ) I used to have one that combo with a blue bucket interior. (The one I have now is white buckets.)
One more. The current paint job is actually a tad darker than Blue Mist. It is not an original Code D car, but when I finish cloning it it will be correct Blue Mist. I'll have to get on the computer at home for old pics of the GS 400.
Wow, I still haven't gotten anything big done with the Buick. I have been purchasing some parts for it though. I got a date coded 400 block and stage 1 heads from a member on here, I picked up a 80k mile 73 455 that runs, got some carpet, and misc emblems when they come up. I'm hoping to start work on the car this winter. First I have to get my 40 Ford put back together.
I have more questions on documentation for this car. If I can not find the build sheet, which will probably not happen due to the car's state of condition, is there any other way to show what options the car came with from the factory? Are there any stamped tags that might have them on the body anywhere? I'm assuming there are no other tags besides the one the VIN is listed with the info I listed earlier. Also, where are the break down stats for these for the 68 and 69s found? Is there a book I can buy for this info? I'm more curious and trying to learn more about the car more than anything. I see guys post on this forum that only 466 GS400s had the W8 rallye stripe option and would like to figure out where these numbers come from. Thanks for the help, Ryan.
Build sheet, Fisher body form, POP, POP imprint, window sticker, order form... Fisher seat tag, maybe? Otherwise, that's it. The data plate usually only provides build date, paint code, top code, bucket/bench and color of said bucket/bench... That's about it..
