For those users that want to be able to resize their own pictures for posting or for avatars, here are a few programs you can download which work well.

For WinXP users: XP resizer Just scroll down to the Image Resizer download link. It's probably the simplest, fastest way for XP users to resize their images.

http://bluefive.pair.com/pixresizer.htm I haven't used this one, but another board member has recommended it.

Lview Pro Choose the 21day trial version download. It still works after 21 days, but is slower to load after the trial period. I've used this in the past, and it's a decent program.

In general posting, a 640 x 480 image is a good fit on the board. Large enough for decent detail, small enough that users shouldn't have to scroll sideways to see the whole image.

For avatars, maximum size is 150 x 150 pixels.

Hope you don't mind a link to The GIMP . Not the easiest imaging program, but its free, powerful, and has no malware.

Thanks Truzi, don't mind at all. Anyone with other programs to recommend, feel free to post links to them here. :TU:

This one allows you to resize in large batches without having to open the actual photos too.

Jeff, I got your PM, and responded. We'll need more info on what you want to do with the picture. Are you trying to make an avatar?

Jeff mentioned he is using Photo Suite II SE; can someone experienced with this program give a step-by-step on image resizing? (I'm a Gimp/Photoshop person.)

I'm not quite sure what you are asking for? Do you want to make and upload an animated GIF? If so, this thread might help you make the picture.

Imagine they come up as thumbnails to conserve valuable space. Just click on thumbnail to see a full size pic !
Here's another photo resizing program called: Easy Thumbnails - www.fookes.com
It's a FREE download, and really easy to use. :TU:

    Hey Everyone,

I have just installed and auto resizer. When uploading images it will automatically resize the image to a max 800px wide. However, I'm still setting a file size limit of 300k. If the image is over 300k you'll need to use Davids method.

This Auto-Resizer is not integrated with V8Garage. You still need to resize those pics.

Here is the test image attached:

An often overlooked contributor to a picture's file size is the resolution.

A computer monitor won't show better than 96 dpi (some no better than 72 - or a few new very expensive new ones that do 120).
Anything else is too much (unless you are going to print it). I'd suggest 72 or 92 dpi resolution.

Mike, will the resizer automatically upscale too? Or will it only shrink the pictures. I rarely upload a photo (usually link with tags), so I've not played with it.

When posting a smaller pic I can set an option to upsize. It is currently set to leave the image alone. Sometimes when upsizing pics the image quality goes bad, pixelizing or fogging up.

That's why I asked... didn't want problems with it upsizing a picture if I was happy with the dimensions.
    Thanx.
