Not being particularly well versed in painting stuff, I am looking for guidance on getting a green dash (had it for years, thank you Ken Staciek) need to paint it brown. I know if I just dive in I'll end up screwing it all up.
What would be the proper prepping, painting and materials needed?

    much thanks in advance

It's very important that you get the surface very clean and it not have "armor-all" type stuff on it. I would try out any chemicals you may use on a small area first to make sure that chemicals do not attack the cover.
Check out SEM products.com for info and prep products

Even for the experienced painter....painting interior parts is a daunting task.
Years and Decades of Silicone Spray Cleaners having been soaking into the Vinyl. You must clean, clean and clean.....prep, prep and prep. First use mild soap and warm water. DO NOT USE AIR TO BLOW FRY! As your compressor air may be contaminated. Then use a wax and grease remover....several times. Then your very first coats should be of an Adhesion Promoter.....light coats. Followed by your color of choice...again, light coats.
    Good luck.

Good stuff, thanks... the victim dash has been shelved for at least a decade, need to evict the spiders first and proceed.

This is a timely thread. I am just purchasing a dash pad for my 66 Wildcat and will need to paint it. Now I get it.... clean, clean, clean, and then, start cleaning it again. Put on adhesion promotor (and brand suggestions?) and many light coats of paint.

I like to start the cleaning with Dawn dish detergent. Twice, maybe three times with a medium brush. You will notice if there is any remaining residue after it dries completely and can continue cleaning if need be. Then adhesion promoter. I like SEM paint best. Like said previously, light coats.

on most all interior plastic you can use thinner to clean it,..rubbing alchohol is good also but thinner is best as it will etch in and provide the best bite,..i promise it won't hurt a thing even on our dash pads

Use a nylon brush to rub it in the grain if you like

I use only Bulldog adhesion promoter the use lacquer spray paint our a urethane base coat,..the good thing about using a urethane base coat is the reducer provides EXCELLENT chemical adhesion

I use acetone to clean all my plastic parts after a few good washings.
Then bulldog adhesion promoter then spray.

Chuck.....the dash pad you are getting i am sure has NEVER had any type of cleaner or silicone spray on it ever.....it is a virgin so i think you will have great results when you dye it !

Max Damage I'm working on it!

Acetone can damage some plastics, so test a small area out ion sight first.
