Planing on buying new rims and tires for my 72 GS. Contemplating 17x8 in front with 225/50-17 Nitto NT555G2’s for the rear 18x9.5 with 285/40-18. Going with 4” backspace on the front. Not exactly sure of the rear backspace, was thinking around 5”. Front tires are 9.17” width 25.91” diameter, rears are 11.42“ width 26.97 diameter. Want to keep the sidewalls sections even. Haven’t picked out a wheel as of yet but want to be sure of backspacing on the rear to see what’s available.

    I have those same tires, 555G2. Mine are 245/50 on 17 x 8 front and 295/40 on 18 x 11 rear.

You'll need more backspace, like 1/4 to 1/2" offset front and 1/4" rear

I looked on Nitto’s website. They don’t have a 245/50-17 listed. May go with the 255/45-17 26.06 dia. 10.04 width. Going to go with the 295/40 in the rear. If you could post a couple of pics when you have time it would be appreciated. Don’t want to be that guy if you know what I mean. Thanks.

Was trimming necessary or done as a precaution. Will most likely go with a 10” wide rim in the rear that will pull in the sidewall ever so slightly.

I have an inquiry to Carid.com. Requesting if the following Nitto NT555G2’s will fit. 255/50-17 on 17x8 with 4.5 backspace in front and 295/40-18 on 18x10 with 5.75 backspace in Rear. Anyone have thoughts on this set up? I will probably purchase from CARiD being they include free mounting kits with hub centric rings if need as well as nitrogen fill.

As a precaution. With a 10" wheel you should be fine. I suggest 5.75" backspace

I don't recommend a 27" tall tire on the front. I would go with 255/45-17. Reason being is contact with the top inner fender screw on suspension compression and contact with the rear of the inner fender on full turns. I also recommend 1/4" to 1/2"1 offset, this helps (believe it or not) with contact on full turns. So 4.75 to 5" backspace

Thanks CARiD recommended 17x8 with a +8 offset and 18x10 with a +6 offset. I’ll go with the 255/45 in front as well. Thanks for the input.

Steve, I am running for rear a 18x10 with 5.7 back spacing on a 305/40/18 they fit but had to trim the lip on the quarter. Now if I knew what I know now I would of gone to a 6" backspace to move the wheel closer to the inside, because I have about 2 inches of clearance on mine. There are many combinations out there but I suggest to borrow a few different wheels from friends or from where ever to test fit and measure from there to verify. I did that but still missed it by a 1/4". Also read all the threads on the Hide and on the Pro-touring thread, lots of good info. My goal was having the fatest tire I could run with having the most meat between the rim and the road. No rubber bands for me, plus the more meat the more cushion you and the wheel have from rough ass roads.
ps: I'm also run the Nittos but the drag radials and the 555G2's up front

Well wheels and tires arrived and are installed. Should of went for more backspace in the rear but CARID insisted on 5.75 could of went with 6 or even 6.25. A4C8FA4C-ABAA-44B8-90E3-3C94FC94C15D.jpeg

255/45-17 on 17x8 front 295/40-18 on 18x10 rear. American Racing Classic Torq Thrust ll with Nitto NT555G2. Waiting on UMI front control arms with .5 longer lower .9 longer upper ball joints and an alignment before driving. Old tires wore a little on the inside on passenger side.

My current set up are US Mags U107
    18x8 w/4.5” BS 245/45
    18x9 w/5.25” BS 275/40
Soon I’ll be switching to American Racing VN510’s. Should fill up my rear fenders a lot nicer.

Finally done UMI front control arms with .5 lower .9 upper ball joints. Have very tight clearance in the back with outside of wheel well. Should of insisted on more backspace. Currently fighting with CARiD to make it right.
