Bought some doorjamb vin decals from Todd a few weeks ago. Looking all over the internet to find the correct location for these. Can't find any pictures to go by. Anyone have a picture of theirs maybe ? It's for a 1971 GS Skylark. Thank you. John B.

They weren't really placed to carefully just under the latch

I actually put the car away for the winter yesterday.

This may be a bit more helpful. 20200209_114128.jpg

Now is this tag for the vin only or does it have a build date on it also? I took mine off my 72 GS350 when I painted the car and misplaced it somewhere, sadly. I want to say it had the build date on it also. Maybe I'm wrong.

Where abouts on the tag? And what did the font look like?

Top right of the blue sticker, kind of underneath the screw. It will be in the, for example, "2/20" or "11/69" format.

Google is your friend. Just type in "GM door VIN tag" and you'll get all kinds of examples.

Here is the original door sticker to one of our cars and a photo of the reproduction sticker I made from scratch to match it. Getting the font to closely match the original typeface required me to use a mix of several fonts in MS Publisher. But after spending hours to get the first one right, now I can make then quickly.

If you look closely you can also see the two different door designs. Some doors, like our original, have two ribs and the decal goes between those. Our door was beyond repair and we used a door from a parts car and it did not have the horizontal ribs. This particular car was not a concours restoration (hence the color change) so we didn't care that the replacement door was an early door without the ribs.

So here are some more photos that show the different door stampings. The very early '70 models are smooth with no horizontal ribs (see the example from a brown 9/69 car). The later design has the two horizontal ribs to indicate where to put the decal (see the brown 12/69 door). The Aqua Mist door is also an early door but now has a 12/69 date because that what we installed the door onto. I included it as another example of a smooth door.

Which vendor has the best color match / best over reproduction of this VIN decal? I have purchased several of these over the years from different sources and non have a close color match.

    Thanks, Matt

I’ve seen early door cars without those two ribs and the decal was above the latch. That’s why they added the ribs.
