I seldom exceed 60-70 in these big cruisers but I would like to reach those speeds quicker. Do I have options? Seems like they both have “gas crisis” era gearing. Thanks.
350 with a 8.5" rear or 455 with 9 3/8" rear? With the 8.5" you have options. Not so much with the 9 3/8" rear.
75 originally had a 350. 74 has a low compression 455 ( had a 2 barrel - I’m trying a Holley Sniper )
The 75 will have an 8.5" rear axle and lots of options. Contact Monzaz on this board and he can set you up with gears, complete axles, bearings, etc. Pretty sure that '75 will have a 9 3/8" rear. Good luck with that one. Nothing available.
I do know the 350 in '75 and '76 Le Sabres had 3.08's and 3.23's as an option In '76 it was the same for the Le Sabre with a 350 Also in '76 if you ordered the option delete 350 instead of the standard 455 in an Electra, you got 3.08's In '75 or '76 with the 455 in either the Le Sabre or Electra, you got 2.56's With the 455 in the Electra in '75 or '76, you could order the towing package (7000 lbs.) and you'd get 3.23's but I don't know which rear those came in.
8.8 MAKE IT 8.875, IT IS A pONTIAC rear with 31 spline bolt in axles AND THEY DID HAVE ONE AFTERMARKET GEAR 3.55 FROM ....yes fABCRAFT. were all still waiting. Jim
I took a 3.08 Posi rear (the whole axle) out of a '71, '72, or '73 Pontiac Catalina for '75 Electra yeeeeeeears ago, it was a direct bolt in, it had the cut outs in the sides of the rear cover, and the flange for the rear CV joint attachment, but it had C-clip axles Im sure it was a C-clip rear as I had to replace clutches in the rear a few years later. Was this a bastard rear?
Not a bastard, thats the Pontiac 8.875 Jim was talking about... like an 8.5 just overall just bigger. Came in 3 carrier sizes 2.56, 2.73 - 3.08, 3.23-3.42. It's a C-clip axle too. Have on in my 72 Grand Ville.
there were 2 forms of the 8.75 / 8.875 8.875 will always have the 1.875 pinion shaft diameter 8.75 that were found in the 1973-1977 a-body upgrade optional rear were 1.625 pinion shaft diameter then the 8.75 was moved to the 78 -88 era cars (wagon deville etc as the heavy duty rear. ) SO as power went down in the vehicle so did the need for the heavy duty larger rears.
