Are Stock Buick Rears Really That Oddball?

Sent my 69 3.42 O-O posi rear out for a rebuild. Dude says it contains oddball buick stuff and it took him three standard rebuild kits to gather up all the parts he needed.

Is that realistic or did he just not know how to order Buick stuff?

I had a shop up in Jensen Beach do some work on my 65 and they had an all original 69 GS in there for work. They said the same thing about his rear, difficult to find parts, original parts. They said the guy wanted to keep the rear original and it was a lot of time and work for them.

Just had my 3.07 diff overhauled on the 68 Wildcat and the car was in for two weeks waiting on bearings and seals. Again 2 kits used for parts and several wrong ones returned. In the end, they had to shim the bearings and it all worked out, so I guess it's a hassle. He said none of the catalogues helped finding parts.

Dude is billing me for three overhaul kits and giving me all the unused stuff, not that i needed it. Wanted to make sure he was being realistic.

My guy billed me for all the extra labour to take it apart several times. Came to $900. CDN. $685. USD. I don't know if that's expensive or a deal. Never had to get a diff done before.

Either Jim,or myself, could have saved a lot of time and headache. I have provided complete kits to members on here before,to eliminate all of the confusion and runaround. Yes,the 68-70 Buick 8.2” is unique to itself, but the bearings are readily available. The only oddball or obsolete parts would be if your rearend has the RW507GR axle bearings. I have those as well.

The main issue is I'm up in Montreal and thru recommendations, used the best diff shop I could find. The shop won't install supplied parts citing the warranty. I do realize they are just protecting the mark up on their own parts, but my options were nil. My car had the bigger 3.07 (PV)diff . This forum has helped me out enormously with all kinds of advice, but the reality is that these cars are long gone up here and so are most of the parts and guys that repaired them. A typical part from Summit ends up costing around 60% more with exchange, shipping and duty than you guys pay and if it's wrong, I have to eat the return shipping as happened recently. Free returns in the U.S. only.

What's the typical pricing for a kit to service a '70 3.64 rear?

Well, if the dude had called me to tell me there was a parts issue, I would have posted here and then bought something here.

As it is, he just went ahead and did his thing and I'm out $150 or so. Such is life -- I've thrown away a lot more...

The initial issue is whether a kit for this rear exists or do you just accumulate the parts necessary for a rebuild.

Yep, AS long as it is all together and correct I can deal too.
But anytime something comes up with any part of the job I call the customer and inform them...YES it takes more time BUT it is the clean way to do work. Jim

We have to MAKE the kits for the 68-70 Buick 8.25 10 bolt rears. It is just too odd of a kit to have on the shelf waiting for a buyer.

I do not charge for every kit I have to scavenge parts from though...??

Like Jim said,we can assemble a kit per piece, not with 3 kits to make one.
    No parts leftover unwanted.

Like Gary mentioned getting parts up here in the great white north is a costly chore. I'd rather spend a week of my time researching to make sure the part I'm ordering is going to work then go through the expense and hassle of sending it back. This summer I found a shop that specializes in trannies and rearends and he's an old school car guy and knows all about these cars and there uniquenesses. He has connections to parts suppliers to get some of the old odd parts. He's speed dial number 2 on my phone lol:p
