What issues might there be with a old plastic model?
I put a bid on ebay for a Revel visible V8 made in 1977. I wan't to cancel my bid but ebay policy's are well written and in this case it would be my fault and I can maby see the seller giving me a negative report.
I wouldn't mind much as a buyer but I have sold lasers before and kept a 100% profile.
Stupid me didn't even think to look for one new as Amazon has them..
Going by what the seller say's and pic's, the box has been opened and some of the plastic bags have been opened but he claims it looks like someone saw it was to hard to make and put everything back, but can't garrantee every piece is there. Pic's show all the pieces are pretty much still attached to the injected mold rails.
Anyone know what issues I might come across on a over 40 year plastic model?
Will the plastic be very brittle?

As long as it wasn't in direct sunlight for ANY time it will be OK. When I bought a NEW one for my boys way back when it was missing 5 parts & the box was NEVER opened it was still sealed in it's plastic wrap.
Had a hellava time trying to get replacements. Still have it & it still does WORK.

If the auction has not ended yet, you should be able to cancel your bid without problems. If it has ended and you won the auction, it is too late to cancel your bid.

It looks like the parts were always in the original box but can't say if the box itself was in anytime itself was placed somewhere were sun light hit it..
Iv'e wanted this model since I can remember and I can't understand why I never bought one??? They were always available and never to expensive????
Glad you still have yours Tom all these years!! This one has the electric motor to run it and hope the little motor is still there.. Some have a crank that iv'e seen.
I can always find and even have plenty little motors but the if the little gears aren't there then it's trouble like you mentioned...

It still has 1 day and 4 hours to go.
Reading ebay's policy's it mentions no canceling with something like 12 hours left, but it also doesn't say cancelling at anytime is good practice unless the buyer miss led you or you made a obvious mistake like bidding "$200" instead of $20.. When you read the rules, it doesn't give you a good feeling for some reason?? lol!

Do you 3D print? You could always make any missing part! Or get your kid to do it! lol Seriously, there should be no problem with the plastic parts. 40 year old glue is another matter.

No, but it's a good idea and never even thought of that if it comes to needing a part.. No kids and no young ones in my family that I know of that does 3D printing.
I'm on a few other forums with people that do though. I'm amazed to how much smoother the texture and more precise these 3D parts are now than even a year..

Not to much, I bid $30 but the shipping is $24. Amazon has the new crank driven ones for I think $69 and free Prime shipping.
Didn't think of the better quality of plastic from then:cool: and maby the new ones are re using old injection molds..
The parts missing and possible sunlight damage whats bothering me but like Tom said his new one was missing parts too..

I got out bid and it got me out of the ebay commitment, and ordered a new one from Amazon with a just a crank to turn it which is ok..
Like you mentioned I re read the reviews on the new one and just about all that built these back in the day say this new model is just plain awful in comparison. I'll fitting and warped parts, and comes with Metric screws that suppositly just don't fit and quite a few mention to get and use a set of SAE 2-56 screws and nuts..Way more sanding and fitting needed also, not normal model making prep but prepping is needed to make the ill fitting parts work..
True, Live and learn I guess but for $80 it really should be better made..:(
You want to laugh? I was only out bid by 50 cents. Not saying I can't still try as there's a few hours left but what the point now and possibly getting 2 bad models for $100 each..

Even at 54 bucks its worth it ESPECIALLY since it has the electric motor, and wheat bulbs for the spark plugs, a working distributor to fire the "spark plugs"
That's the type I had, electric motor, and spark plugs.
The new version isn't as cool.

    Wow wicked nice video!
I might just order a older model also, as your right having the motor and plugs fire is really what it's all about..

I just had to go back and watch that video again, and the that little thing is pulling like just like a real one on a dyno!! He beefed up certain parts and I think made his own cam profiles?? Am I wrong??!!

I will try my best but Electra man!
The problem with ebay is alot of these models even though suppositly complete the boxes and and plastic bags have been opened for I guess curiousity and some sellers can't guarrentee all the parts are there. The still sealed ones are going to be over $100 without shipping but thats ok as as they are classic's.. Let me see what I get with the Amazon one first though..but the wheat bulb firing spark plugs and motor i'm sure i'll get the old one anyways..
Someone on a review mentioned these visible V8's are a copy of Caddy's first or 2nd overhead valve V8??
Brandon, yup I saw quite few engine style's available, and I think including a Chevy or Ford with a tuned port intake but I just have to go with the classic. Do you have old version V8?

That fine with me! I edit my previous post after repeated watching of that video and that guy is hard core:D Something about a custom cam grind?? cause he couldn't get it over 3500rpm's??
His home made oil potions and springs and what not!
and yes I would think a wankle engine with just a spinning triangle inside isn't as fun as watching pistons and valves and rockers doing there stuff:)

Great heads up video Mark Thanxs;) Never saw one up in person and really had no idea to how everything was fastened or put together in general..
Good to know Vasoline will work with the plastic as that was something I was wondering about. Didn't know if it would soften the plastic.
Another thing is I need to get some wooden clothe pins, as I was planning on the small plastic clamps from Harbor Freight. I ordered a new exacto knife kit with a bunch of new blades.
Yes this is going to be long project, and now thinking even though I wasn't that bad with my hands when I was 12, I would of probably broke alot of pieces trying to build it.
I tend to rush things and this is something that I need to take my time with..
