How do i clean out original fuel tank, what do you use to get it clean, it been sitting at least 15 years, just pulled it out of shed, or is it better to replace it, I covered gas cap opening with spray can lid and duct tape , so inside should be fairly clean except for what residual fuel was in it. Most tanks are cheap enough, buy new if possible. If not , buncha utube video on gastank cleaning, some using small stone inside and tank strapped to cement mixer....there's always a way...Jim
Fuel tanks are easy to clean. All you need is a 1/2 gallon to gallon of diesel fuel, some metal chain and a little time. Put the chain and diesel fuel in the tank and seal up all the openings with duct tape or whatever. Leave this in there for a few days and shake it good every now and then, making sure the chain hits the entire inside of the tank. Drain it out, rinse good with water (I use hot water) and let it dry good. Now it's clean and ready to coat or whatever. I rarely replace fuel tanks, most cleaned and reused. Keith
diesel is a good, cheap solvent but it is prone to static buildup from moving over surfaces. JP-4 (yeah, I am an old Crew Chief...) is basically 50/50 kerosene/gasoline (for sake of discussion) and prone to static electrical buildup during handling. Diesel is less flammable than kerosene (a small bit), but does have similar issues with static buildup, but de-sulphured K is less prone to static. Acetone, denatured alcohol, mineral spirits and paint thinner are all slightly more hazardous, so you have an idea. Just be mindful of ignition sources. (but a given with anything fuel system related).
I usually it use something a bit bigger and beefier. Even like kids swing set chain works good. Keith
