Just broke in my new Level 3 crower cam in the 350 and was going to drain the break in oil and get some high zinc oil from the parts store. They only carry the 20W-50 in VR1 the 10W-30 has to be ordered. No Lucas Hot rod oil with high zinc either.... I can wait but wanted to get it wrapped up today. Is it me or the price for this oil has gone up? I began doing some research and the cheapest is $35 on Amazon, but everywhere else is twice as much! Iv'e read in forum it was $5 a quart, now it's pushing $12 @ walmart. $9 @ pepboys. I almost want to get some conventional oil and add the additive but I don't want to risk messing up my new cam. My local stores need to keep the good stuff in stock. Only 10w30 ZR1 I found locally was $10 a quart and AMSOIL @ 14 a quart. I think 20w-50 VR1 might be too thick to use in my 500 mile break in, if not I'd pick up a jug
15 w40 Rotella T plus Oil additive good to go what do you think STP is They have another STP for older cars if you can find it higher zinc content.
Gave them a call and they didn't have it , could be the guy at the counter is clueless, I'll have a look after work!
P/N VAL 822388 https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/VAR822388 Don't know if the CARB may have restrictions in Cali.
Napa does carry it, no stores in the area have it at the moment. We also have this cool spot called Winchester auto, they have 30 straight weight for the VR1 , and 20W-50 @ $6 a quart. thats a pretty good deal since. They also carry Royal Purple. Would I be fine running some 20w 50 for the 500 mile break in? I placed an order for the 10w 30 for afterwards
If you can't wait you can mix grades of oil and use STP oil treatment for older cars has a higher content of zinc additive.
Thanks, sounds like I'm leaning towards playing it safe and waiting for the oil to arrive. I'd rather have that extra insurance. Thanks for all the input!
If you're just gonna use the 2050 till you get the 1030 I think that will be fine as long as it's warm weather and let the engine warm up you do not want to take out the front cam bearing like a big block.
The VR-1 10w-30 was $30 for a 6 pack from Amazon about a week or so ago. Keep checking, maybe it'll come back down.
