Has anyone recovered a pair of front buckets for a 70 GS with the deluxe pattern recently,or does anyone have an original 70 GS bucket seat to show how exactly the foam was? I am recovering my buckets from my 70,with my special-order red covers, and I want to get everything exact. I ordered the covers and new foam from Legendary. The bottom foams have the grooves or trenches cut on each side, but the backs are plain. Is this correct for a 70 GS seat? My seats had been recovered before, and they used generic foam,so I don’t have a reference to go from.
If anyone has pictures, that would be great.

I saw those too. I ordered the regular foams with the listing wire cuts on the backs. Do your back covers have the pockets for the listing wires? If so, you need the cuts. Wellington is best price. I haven't had time to cover mine yet, so someone else (Duane????) can chime in.

Generic process: Fast forward to the backs...

I'm a couple weeks away from pulling my driver's seat and recovering it with a nice OEM cover I got on here and foam from this place, that came highly recommended:

Not sure if Legendary uses them or makes their own?

Brett - Did you get the "mixed A body" foams?

No one makes the correct front seat top foams for the 67, 68, 69, or 70 GS Bucket seat interiors. The bottoms would be the same as the Chevelles etc. with the 2 slots, but you will need to cut the "U" shaped channel into the cushion for the 70 front seat tops.

That is probably why you got plain tops and grooved bottoms.

I do not have any cushions to measure, you will have to get that answer from someone else.

Also, the easiest and best way to install the covers is to take out the "paper" cording in the listing around the inserts and replace it with wire. That way when you put the hog rings in, it will not make a "dimple" in the seat covers at every attachment point, but will even out the pressure all the way around the insert. (The old steel coat hangers are great for this. I also bend the wire back on itself at both ends to round off the wires so they will not have any chance to poke through the seat covers.)

Once you cut the listing "slot" in the upper foams Hog ring a wire directly to the frame, from one end of the slot to the other. That way when the insert gets hog ringed down, it makes it easier to do and again, evens out the look at the attachment points. So to reiterate, for the tops I put a wire in the seat cover and another on the frame.

If you ever wondered why some seat covers have "puckers" all the way around the inserts, instead of a nice sweeping line like the originals, well now you know.

PS. For a 67, 68, 69, or 70 you are probably better off not getting slotted cushions for the tops. That way once you cut the slots where they need to be, you don't have to "fill in" the slots that you don't need, and have a chance of the cover showing a depression underneath.

Thanks Duane - so which foam back should we use for 70, the flat one with no cuts or the one Brett shows above?

You might be able to get away with that foam, it all depends on how high the listing slots go up. But you will still need to cut it at the top.

PS. That 66-70 A-body Designation is for the Chevelles and GTO's NOT Buicks or Oldsmobiles.

    Brian,

What do the foams you bought look like?

I'm on the Legendary site and the foams they list seem to be from the same company I posted the link to earlier - A.C.I.

    Brett,
He may have got the cushion set for a 71 Chevelle. If Memory serves me correct they had the listing grooves in the bottoms but nothing on the tops. (Need to verify that.)

If they have no grooves in the top & bottom, that would be for a 72 Chevelle, which would also work for a 71-72 Buick GS/Skylark.

I got everything from Legendary. The foams are listed as 67-70,and that is how they are labeled on the box. They have plain tops and slotted bottoms. I have been through this process with my Oldsmobile’s,and that is why have have a few excellent original foams for those 70-72 models,so I can duplicate the look with the new foams.

Would you mind posting any pictures of the OEM foams/differences in them?

I think it would make a great reference going forward.

I think I did this years ago so everyone would know the differences. I went into how the frames changed, and how the cushions differed. I thought it was made into a sticky, maybe not.

I know I did an article for the BPG Newsletter "The Build Sheet" on this and included some sketches as well. It answered all the questions for 65-72 Buick A-body Bucket seats.

I may have given a copy to George Nenadovich, and if so it would be on his site. If someone wanted to check on that and add a link.................................

I can post pictures of my foams when I get a chance. Some are in my loft, and some are in my other building. Duane is correct about how the frames changed as well.
