My mother told me that back in 1944, she brush painted her 37 Plymouth. She was an executive secretary and pointed the car out to her boss who could look out the window and see the shiny car in the lot.
Mom said it looked good from across the street.
Mom is 97 this year, still doing ok but can't hear for **** and is getting a bit rattled.

97 and I will bet has a ton of good stories like that. Funny how I thought “ brush paint a car... hahaha” turns out more people have done it
so I guess I learned more from this thread than I thought I would.

My first "paint job" was my Dad's 1986 Pontiac 6000 wagon. It was that nice GM gray they had back then that'd delaminate and flake off the hoods and roofs. Well, his was doing like they all do, and he decided to let junior high Lucas and one of his buddies give repainting it a go. After sanding for 2 days, I got tired/bored of it and decided it was good enough to paint. Now mind you, we were only supposed to paint the tops of the hood and roof....... I cruised it down to the local ROBO (yes, in junior high I drove through town) and proceeded to wash off all the old paint dust from sanding it. Well, wouldn't you know it, the sides of the car started blowing off paint in huge sheets. "Cool!" I thought, "We can just blow this all off and paint the whole car". Well paint was coming off in areas as big as your torso, and flying up and sticking to the roof and walls of the wash bay. I drove in with a gray car, and after a couple bucks I left with a primer/bare metal one.........About 10 years later I found out who owned the car wash in town as I was a fireman with him. I told him the story about blasting my Dad's Pontiac's paint off in one of his stalls........he remembered the incident and didn't find it nearly as funny I and the rest of the crew did..........

I'll explain it thusly: It looked like two 13 year old kids painted one of their Dad's cars with 8 cans of Duplicolor metallic gray in the alley after sanding it with 80 grit........

My wife had a handed-down ‘85 Impala that was that color and looked like Elephant skin on the trunklid. A friend at the paint store mixed me a pint of it, thinned it and put it in a pressurized sprayer. I think I used 120 grit, maybe 150, masked the decklid and sprayed it in a dirt driveway. It was somewhat of an improvement, and it really beaded water when wet!

I painted this with a roller and paving paint. As you can see, a glossy finish wasn't a deal breaker.

OZGS455 Oh what a wonderful day!

Looks to be a Vauxhall Cresta?.....
Hey back in my drinking days had some desperados turn up at my shop wanting an early'70s GM wagon painted for a coupla slabs of beer, it was in primer already and they didnt care what colour.
I had a gallon of sky blue waterbase housepaint under the bench, "How about blue?"
They went and got the beer and we started masking up, and drinking beer of course.
Gave it a few coats as we drank more beer.
Finished and unmasked as we drank more beer
Beer ran out around the time the car was finished and I bade them farewell.
Around that timed it started to rain.
Is it ok to drive in the rain they said.
    Yeah sure! said I
Few weeks later saw the car downtown and it had gone full on wrinkle finish!

Well, the shop that was to paint my '69 Z/28 checked it out fall/early winter of 2017. "We'll be ready for it around February ('18)". February '19 has come and gone. My car sits home. I asked the shop owner IF he still wanted to do my car and he said he definitely did. Meanwhile, I have seen other major builds go in and out. There is, however, a 2nd gen Vette sitting on a lift that has been there well over a year. I am looking again.

Back in the late 80's I was looking for a place to paint my 71 Stage 1. A new paint & body shop had opened in town so I went there to get a quote. The owner said he would strip my car to the bare metal, fix the rust hole in the right front fender and prime and paint it with a BC/CC for $850. Being the cheapskate that I am, I asked him how much it would be if I stripped it to the bare metal first. He said it would still be $850...

Back in the mid seventies I had an uncle that painted his 71/72 cutlass with a brush using automotive paint. He put linseed oil in it cause he said that would hide the brush marks.
