I can buy a beater Grand Cherokee for a grand and ram rod IT through the salt and slop and preserve my tow vehicle. I drop my truck to storage insurance, put plpd on a beater and go! Cheapest time of year for me with drop in insurance premium. I can't put a rocker panel on my truck and paint it to match for a grand, so the beater makes financial sense. What amazes me more than the amount of salt they spread. Is the amount of people that will go plunk down 45,50,55 grand on a Silverado to drive through the crap, or 70,80,90 on a tahoe/yukon/suburban, or 100k on an Escalade.
100% agreed. I bought my '74 2wd F100 to save my '94 4wd F250 from being driven in the winter. I've had the F250 since I was 21, so it's kind of important to me and I'm trying to keep it from rusting away because of the crap they put on the roads here. It hasn't been driven since the first snow flew, and it'll only come out if we get a blizzard and there's 5 feet of snow that gets laid down that the old 2 digger can't get through.
Yeah, my sister's $80,000 2006 Lexus SUV is headed for scrapyard due to frame rust thru.....she thinks she did well....over 10 years and 200k miles.... Ha? I've got a 50 year old car that was driven all year long for half it's life....and the frame is going to out-live me....

I have a rust-free (rustproofed as well) '05 extended cab Z/71 that sat inside through the winter unless we needed 4wd. I drive a rusty (since 2001) '92 Plymouth Acclaim with about 190,000 miles. This winter Chevy hasn't been out since I bought a 2011 Toyota 4Runner. When I travel alone I still take the Plymouth. The Toyota I drive when out with my wife. She will take it when it is real nasty out. Her '14 Dodge Journey is FWD.
I’m not sure why, but the copious amounts of salt used here in Salt City (Syracuse, NY) never seems to bother anything regarding getting into the water system. Vehicles, sure, it kills them. We had an 18 Chevy in the shop from a local body shop for suspension work. It had 5,000 miles on it. Some of the items needed to be removed were already seized due to corrosion.
I know that they need to maintain our roads unfortunately salt seems to be the answer I try to wash my truck every week especially the under side just suck when the weather gets better I have to wait for 5or6 good rains to get my cars out.
Ya they apply lots of salt on the US interstate system yet have huge pile ups every year. Why do you suppose that happens. Over the week end a 32 car/truck pile up near my daughters on I 94 Ea Clair Wisconsin. Is it possiable those 4x4's while they can go just can't stop worth s***, people tail gate and speed. I 94 from Detroit to the windy city should be avoided in the winter time also. Been so many multi car pile ups on that streach in the last 5 years isn't funny, multi deaths too. I'll take the salt in the winter rather than icy roads,the way people drive today expesly those with 4x4 and AWD. I will run my truck thru the car wash every other day for the under carrage flush if need be. People pay 3 to 4 bucks for special coffees yet whine about a $6.00 car was and under carrage flush. Might be a bussiness Idea even open up a place with hoist so you can spray the whole under sides of new cars and trucks with POR 15. Al
But most people don't know how to use them. Really, I thought 4x4 means you can do anything in any weather, I saw it in a commercial. Says every idiot out there. I remember seeing a newspaper picture of a brand new Mercedes SUV( temp plates on it) upside down it the median. I bet they had the same thoughts. And this was 1990. A Wyoming State trooper I knew once told me that he was watching traffic on a snow/icy day. A 4x4 SUV flew past him. He slowly took off behind. only to find the SUV whipped out in the ditch 2 miles down the road. I seen it too coming home in a snow storm, a Jeep Cherokee and a 4x4 pick up. Flies past us. Where doing maybe 30-35. about 3 miles down the road the Jeep is buried in the snowy median. Wait, if there is snow covering the roads, how can the computer see the lines to know where to keep the car in the lane. Whose fault will it be if one of those self driving vehicle whips out and causes a 50 vehicle pile up, killing 3 people. Tim
No here in Maine - They use such course salt you can see the crystals bouncing all over the road when they drop it. Also, many towns around me (and the state) mixes it with gravel. It's great for your car. In addition to rotting it to death, you go through 1 windshield every couple years from stones in the gravel being kicked up.
Don't they just filter the larger particles out of the water and re-cycle it? Most car washes re-use all that the they can..
Not my words, but words from how car washes work according to the Google machine: To cut down on the amount of water used, a lot of car washes recycle water. The recycled water is normally used in the early rinses and to mix with the detergents. It may also be used in the high-pressure washer. It should never be used in the final rinse.
I agree. Just because you can get going quicker with 4WD or AWD, doesn't make it stop any quicker. And, as Tim stated, the TV commercials touting the 4WD/AWD vehicles show them blasting through deep snow like they are invincible. So, our not-so-intelligent folks go buy one, if their credit allows. They become invincible in their own ignorance. The rest we have witnessed. It's just too bad when they hurt or kill others or destroy their property.
Just the last few days, with all of the inclement weather, I see way too many drivers with the daytime running lights on instead of properly using full lamp illumination, front and rear. The "My lights are on automatically" mentality has superceded common sense. Daytime running lights are useless and give the drivers a false sense of security. VOLVO made a fortune marketing "safe cars" for incompetent drivers. The car mfgrs. today are guilty of so much worse with all of these driving aids. I say teach people to drive properly or write them a ticket until they do. This apathetic BS that allows marginal drivers to continue to contribute to dangerous situations needs to stop. As far as the amounts of salt being used? They probably are excessive but as was stated earlier, if a .Gov agency does not spend every penny and more of this years budget, next years budget gets cut. There is no incentive to economize if you are going to be penalized.
They've actually started pulling people over here for going too slow, which I'm enjoying. On my 3 hour interstate drive this last weekend, it was 1 lane of traffic on each side for about 40 miles because the passing lane was froze over with black ice and snow, and the right lane could've been the middle of summer for how good and clear that lane was. People going 35 MPH down the interstate are just as (I believe more) dangerous as morons going 80 MPH in that situation. If you're that scared, get off the interstate and idle down the frontage road. 55-60 MPH would've been a nice, safe, easy one lane drive everyone could cruise at. 35 MPH and nobody can pass you, but you still get that 80 MPH moron coming up on the poor guy in the back of the 1/4 mile long convoy you're holding up = no good.

Said they would clean engine parts in big open air pits with Freon. Is that GMO salt, Maybe you could walk a herd of cows through town to lick up all the salt. Im sure the govnt could afford to use them nascar track drying machines. WTF.

If your getting broken windsheilds then your tail gateing way I see it. Yes I have always enjoyed the cattle mentality follow in the same icy path tail gateing so if the leader spins out, all H*** breaks out. Best to have at least one pair of wheels in the lease packed lane and stay back so you can have room to dodge. Possiably I should say the same thing here I say to winter whiners, complainers. South is that way. Many places in Arizona do not see cold and snow and in this case salt. Ya I have heard all about the family being here and the job. The job you got when you were looking for one in the cold snowy north, you knew about it so stop compaining. The family if you have small kids take them with you by all means, grown up kids can fend for them selves.
