About to pull the trigger on a new Cam for my 1970 Buick Skylark It has the 70 350 originally 2bbl Now has a 4bbl intake and sniper EFI system. M replacing the cam due to a bad lifter, might as well upgrade the cam. I want an easy cam swap with a good sound and decent power increase . I don't want to get into the heads yet since Im going to be buying some ported ones in the future. Which cam would go best with my 350 with stock stall converter and open rear 2.56 gear. I don't mind the rear gear at the moment since I daily it from time to time and is planning a road trip. Thanks guys
I am not a SBB expert, but I've built a "few" different engines and cars. With that high of a rear gear and a stock converter, you're going to want as "mellow" of a performance cam as possible. I'd go with the Crower from looking at the specs. Normally when you get over 220 degrees at .050 it's time to start thinking about a stall converter and some gears. Overcamming something makes a car not fun to drive, even if it's cool to quote big specs and listen to a lopey idle.
Thanks guys, I'm guessing I won't really need a valve spring change either with this cam? I narrowed it down to these two and I even thought of the 212 but I wanted something with a nice Lope, but I Definitely Do not want to over cam it.
https://www.crower.com/camshafts/buick-350-compu-pro-hydraulic-cam-276-hdp.html Stock springs should be OK unless they are fatigued and old, which they probably are. You'll want to degree the cam, so get a multi key way timing set, not a stocker. Might as well get the double roller.
Sounds good! I am just trying to see if there is a way to replace the springs without removing the heads. I've seen someone use a compressor to pump air into the cylinder while using a tool to remove them, doesn't seem to bad but don't want to drop a valve in as well haha As far as degreeing the cam someone mention 4 degrees advanced which will be marked on the new double roller I'm assuming Thanks guys , I have yet to do a cam swap, just timinnf chain replacement
Pull the spark plug, feed a couple feet of rope into the cyl, then rotate the engine to bring the piston up and hold the valves closed
Yes there is a way. Stuff some nylon rope into a cylinder and bring the piston to TDC. Then use a valve spring compressor tool. Assumption is the mother of all screw ups. If all it took was aligning 2 dots and/or using a certain keyway, there would be no reason to degree a cam at all. You HAVE TO make sure the cam you received agrees with the cam card. Dots or keyways don't guarantee anything unfortunately. http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/camshaft-degreeing-101.220945/
You guys convinced me to change the valve springs. Stock replacements? Or is there a recommendation for the Crower level 3? I might as well order them together haha
Call Crower and ask, but I don't think that cam needs much spring. look at the kits to the right on this page. (related products) Might be more than you need. https://www.crower.com/camshafts/buick-350-compu-pro-hydraulic-cam-276-hdp.html
