I am wanting to paint the interior pieces of my 69 so I can start some kind of reassembly but it's been apart so long I don't remember what gets painted, entire body was media blasted so dash is in primer, I think glove box door, ashtray, both windshield pillar pieces and bottom piece of steering column, I don't remember is there a piece above windshield and rear window for the headliner.
I see this post is getting some age on it. Were you able to find an answer? I do have a parts car that I can look over next weekend.
Make sure upper dash and pieces around rear windshield are painted flat to prevent glare like original. Lower dash is semi gloss.
The A-pillar moldings, if metal, should be somewhere along the scale of satin to semi-gloss black. What I mean by "the scale" is Satin being a flatter finish compared to semigloss black. I'm not saying Satin if flat...it's not as it has some sheen to it BUT not nearly as much as the typical semi-gloss finish. I would not go flatter than any given satin paint for the A-pillar moldings. The "problem" is semi-gloss.........I don't know what you're spraying the parts with (ie - spray can paint?....or custom mixed spraying with a spray gun?). MANY semi-gloss paints can be VERY glossy and too much for the A pillar moldings. As far as any "pieces above the headliner or rear window".....there aren't any that are exposed so nothing to worry about there. There are metal "tack strips associated with the headliner BUT they are covered up by the headliner.....and....DO NOT paint any of those with spray can paint. Why?........typical glue used for headliner attachment is very aggressive and may just lift the paint and cause attachment problems. There's a reason the factory left parts like BARE METAL.
I would go along with Patton as I remember the pillar pieces being Satin almost like the steering column. If you go with original lacquer they only offer flat or semi. I remember lower dash a bit more shiny.
I think he may also be asking about the grained vinyl strip that runs along upper windshield and around rear windshield as well as sides. Those were pretty flat. Use flexible adhesion promoter on those before painting them
Here is an original black side molding that runs along side of headliner. It barely reflects light but had no shine. I would call it flat.
Those may vary with age/environment....I have numerous sets of headliner windlace (that's what all those pieces are typically referred to) and most are reasonably shiny. Just checked the originals in one of my Olds's (never been removed from car, original interior, etc) and they are closer to semi-gloss sheen. Those are vinyl that is molded over a flexible steel core. They can also act like the sport steering wheel rims - both Olds and Buick wheels - where the rubber/vinyl material ages and gets gooey.....plasticizer migration. Agree on the metal a-pillar moldings...they are about the same sheen as the upper steering column finish. I think "eddie" must have disappeared.....who knows
