Bath time...not so much fun in 40 degree weather. Had to happen, though. The grille was not repainted since it still wears the original paint. It's not perfect, but still a cool moment retained from its history.
He is on his way. I'll be polishing stainless today. Bumpers and wheels/tires are on their way with the crew. There is a remote possibility we will have it running. Need to install driveshaft and one more carb bolt (missing, of course). As long as the dashboard goes together easily.. The list is shrinking.
I'd say a combination of it being apart for a long time combined with being transported to a couple different shops. Parts tend to grow legs
I used trunk splatter paint from TPP...interesting stuff. It's necessary to have a black base or else it won't cover. It is pretty much just grey/aqua flakes in a black sludge. If you ever use this stuff, use an old primer gun that you're planning on throwing away. At the end of the day, it does a fine job looking the part. I think the flakes are smaller than the splatter pattern that came from the factory, though. It smells horrible. Did I mention it stinks? Smells like a mix between csandy/bubble gum and the trap in the kitchen sink. I opened the door to the car this morning (sprayed the trunk last night) and about died. I'm going to try an ozone generator on it to see if I can get rid of it, or at least mask the odor. Since it's Veterans' Day (observed), there was no mail...so no parts. I have 4 packages ready to be delivered via USPS with some key components to wrap a few things up. I worked on stainless repair today for the most part. Tonight, the car will "air out" as much as possible. So for those who think NOS parts are the cat's meow, the front wheel opening moldings on this car are an interesting exercise in NOS versus good used/restored. Left WOM is an original that I cleaned up. The right one is NOS out of the plastic wrapping, that I also polished. The NOS one has some really terrible gaps all around the opening. By terrible, I mean like 1/8" in one spot, and varying smaller gaps all around. the left one fits tight against the entire opening like it should. So now I feel like I have to grab one out of my stash to replace the NOS one. I purposefully used the NOS one so I didn't have to fix any dents. Well, that didn't get me very far. I can shoot some pics tomorrow to show the difference. ...and the trunk mat the CARS sent is wrong....like off the charts wrong. So we may be sans a trunk mat for the car this weekend...unless I can harvest one from another car.
...Mike said he has all bumpers and brackets. I hope that is the case LOL ...otherwise, we will be cannibalizing the orange 72 to get this one going for the show. I imagine he made provisions for it already. We went through the list of parts needed to make it happen. Lou, at this point, I am going to hold off with parts gathering until after the show. I think we have what we need to make it work for now.
I stuck the grille emblem on tonight. Probably in the wrong spot, but without a bumper it’s hard for me to see where it will look best. I picked up the last of the parts packages at the office this afternoon. Lots of key stuff in there from John Stevens and Duane. Thanks for working with me on getting this stuff here fast, guys.
Funny you mention that. The emblem came with a homemade packing plate...so as usual, parts wrong/missing. Guessing game. #fuckit
Do you have a pic of an original plate where the hole might be on the backing plate? I might be able to get it closer.
