Thermostat housing with sensor hole?

I was thinking the same thing. There would be a heat differential. The fans would kick on based off of temperature before the thermostat. I don't know how much of a difference that would make. The t-stat opens at a certain temp...the fans would kick off around 170 or thereabouts. I'd have to look at the specs. Maybe i'm thinking too much about it.

Anybody know the engine side and post t-stat side heat differential?

Why would there be? The temperature differential on each side of the thermostat should be very low if anything. That upper hose tap should work just fine. My only worry would be clearance and it weighing the hose down.

The only issue would be running a CTS that controlled the mixture/ enrichment. It'd be pig rich until the t-stat opened.

On my Duramax, as I mentioned earlier, i had the bung welded to run the temp sending unit to run the stock 77 gauge. It reads nothing at all until the first thermostat opens at 180. Then the gauge jumps up. No big deal but it honestly takes forever. This wouldn't fly with a CTS. It'd be a plug fouler for sure.

We're just a day or so away from firing the engine. Here's the housing setup that I made up. The original temp sender location has my electric fan switch in it. Pay no attention to the wire mess. They are temp routed for the engine break in. It will get cleaned up after the break in... 20181024_153751.jpg 20181024_153758.jpg 20181024_161149.jpg 20181024_161207.jpg

Looks good, I didn't think there'd be enough 'meat' in the housing for that to work?! Nicely done!

There's just enough to make it work. Put a little thread sealant on and we should be good to go. The biggest pain was finding the 3/8NPT Tap for it. Went to 5 stores before I found one.

That should work nicely if it doesn't leak. A weld in bung will work if it does.

I sure hope it doesn't leak. I used the thread sealant on it as you may have seen. I've used it on a couple of engines now and no leaks yet, so I'm fairly confident this one should be the same. Of course now that I say that, it will leak. haha.

So what are you running off that new temp sensor? A fan then?

The new sensor will support the aftermarket temperature gauge from speed hut. Also, I'm thinking I can also hook up the dummy light...just need to see if the sensor is the same as factory specs.

The electric fans are running off of a thermoswitch that's installed in the factory sensor location.

Speed hut gauges, excellent! I love mine. I’ve got 3 under the ash tray area and I put one of their tachs in the dummy spot where a tach would be (if someone would of ordered it on my car)

I really like the quality look of them. The ability to custom order them is cool too. I like how the font is fairly period correct looking.

I eliminated the petcock and put the thermal sensor for my fan in it
