now that he has it apart in his photos he can just put cover and damper back on with the chain on the marks and see if damper is still off
I guess I was thinking maybe the damper hadn’t slipped, if he was off in finding TDC then the position of his damper obviously wouldn’t be lined up.
now that he has it apart in his photos he can just put cover and damper back on with the chain on the marks and see if damper is still off The First pic with cover off is at TDC. I put an dial indicator on top of piston as it was coming up on compression stroke and stopped at the highest reading. I then took the cover off and that pic is how chain was lined up. The next picture, i placed the cover back on and the balancer, the mark is not lined up with the keyway , its about 4 inches to the left of zero. It must have slipped.
so you were running retard, going by the stock mark you would be about 25-30 degrees retard ? right or wrong ?
Go ahead Mart, I can't make it this week, to backed up. If it were a 10 minute drive I would spend a half an hour there to figure it out making it a 50 minute round trip, 10 minutes back less than an hour. But blah, 40 minutes of driving one way and that would be without I-696 NOT all tore up! I heard they got that thing shifted over to one side to work on the other side! Sorry Mark, I can't make it but looks like Mart wants to! this is for Mart!

Thanks for the help everyone.
I have put the engine back together. I have drawn this sketch of a top view of the distributor. Number 1 cylinder is at TDC compression stroke, balancer mark at 0, Would #2 turned clockwise be advanced? and #3 turned counter clockwise be retarded? or do i have it backwards ?
Makes sense now. I had it retarded like #3 pic which explains the overheat. I will rotate clockwise, and set total timing at 30 deg. at 2500 rpm to finish the break in. Thanks for the help.
