I work with guys like that! John, Id bet you have more in that engine than 14.69. With a wideband installed, some carb tuning and timing adjustments, you might get that down into the low 14's. What gears are in the rear?
It's a good rule. Problem is when you have one that leaks enough to be annoying but not enough to be a serious issue. It can make you crazy!
3.42 posi in the rear, and now it doesn't matter what I did in the 1/4- all that does is how much faster I'll go in the future. I wasn't willing to drop wideband money without at least giving a shot at performance on my own. How is anyone supposed to learn this stuff if you don't try it? Also, what is the best way to remove snapped off bolts in the timing cover?
To this point, it is. The timing chain is fried, the cam is too weak, the car is too slow, and it runs too hot. Can't touch the carb or you'll burn yourself. Don't get me wrong, I like that it threw up a quality time. But I want more, and so it will happen...
Drill baby drill! Your probably going to want to step up to the TA cover and oil pump assembly anyway. If there is anything left of the bolt to grab onto, you clamp a vice grip on whats left and heat it a little with some acetylene. Don't go nuts, just enough to get them moving. If theyre flush, you gotta drill them.
If your lucky, you can remove the broken bolt by drilling it, using an easy out and some heat. Then you can just clean up the original threads with a tap. Otherwise, you'll have to helicoil the hole. But I don't think your going to want to re-use the old cover when new, improved replacements are available
Im assuming your rebuilding the engine? Then again, your talking to the guy that put a $700 timing case cover on a $900 car
On a budget. I aim to not touch the bottom end except get the oil pump booster plate. I may reach the bearings and then inspect and reassemble, but I'm not sure I have the skill to do that
