I just replaced the starter from Jamie (The guy who sells the starter hee) with a Powermaster 9511 . Both works great, I have the same transmission like you.

How is it different from any other small-flywheel (153-tooth) Chevy V-8 starter?

Manual takes the same starter as auto

The windings are different on stock starters for a small versus a big blocks. Look for the copper bridge at the back of a big block starter.

Yeah, some OEM starters have an inch-long spacer between the solenoid and the tab from the field coils. SOME of those starters have more power than the starters that don't have the spacer.

Plenty of "fake" high-torque starters that have the spacer, but don't have extended-length field coils or armature windings.

At any rate, the starter nose castings should be similar. In the Chevy world, there's some discussion about OEM iron starter noses versus OEM aluminum; and the way I remember it the iron nose will fit certain manual transmission bell housings when the aluminum nose has clearance problems. None of that really matters if you're using an aftermarket "Mini" "Chevy/Buick" starter.

thanks for the reply i have a mini starter i bought from ta performance when it was auto they told me it would fit a manual as well. it fits but when you look through the starter hole you can see all the gearing/ teeth when fitted. to me thats not good as it will fill up with road dert . does the starter you have cover the complete starter hole. cheers kev
