Up until now, I had never seen a 72 GSX in person...let alone a Stage1 4 speed. The goal is to get this car to the Chicago show in mid-November. MCACN is having a GSX showcase, and this will be the representative of the 72 model year. So, here we go! I have already removed all the trim and interior. Working on eradicating the mouse nests and turds that have collected in the various nooks and crannies....and the headliner. It was raining mouse poop when I pulled that thing down. Next order of business is a new set of quarters and outer wheelhouses. This car has at least 3 red paint jobs and 17 gallons of filler on it. Both quarters have been wrecked, rusted, and cobbled together. All of those awesome body lines are gone.
Wow awesome project Now the count down. Good luck have fun and be positive. Will be following this thread.
A legit 72 X stage 4 speed? Man that's one of just a few for sure, those stripes are too small btw ha
I'm glad this car did not cross my path first, I would have spent $100k making it perfect for sure....I can't wait to see it done!
1 of 2, to be exact. This was Bill Van Steen's car a while back and up until a few months ago, I thought it had vanished into obscurity .
Think the owner's first name in BC was Harmen (sp). I flew out to look at in the late 80's. Was not quite what I was looking for, pays to bring a magnet.
What's this? A rust free rear window channel? Amen! It was completely full of sealer, though. I'm not even sure of how the trim was able to clip into the clips, it was so full. I guess it saved the channel, though.
Wow that is such an awesome find !!! Good luck with the restoration , look forward to seeing it someday !!!
That was the old Dempsy (Sp?) car and originally a GSX 350. I think Larry Miller's widow, Karen, still owns it. The car Adam is doing was a 455 X from the factory. Both are great looking.
I spent a few hours surgically removing the majority of the left quarter panel this evening. I'm glad we decided to do the quarters. When I cut around the edge of the wheel lip, I just pulled on it and it came off in my hands. So the outer wheel house will need to be repaired. I bought new ones for both sides, but may just splice a new edge on from the new pieces. Tomorrow, I will finish removing the upper pieces around the trunk and rear window. The AMD quarters look really nice and have the correct body line at the wheel opening. They are definitely a thinner gauge than original, but I'm not complaining. At least we have them available. One of the photos shows a cross section of the lower quarter. The previous "body guy" just welded on new sheet metal over the old rusty stuff. I think this car will be a few pounds lighter once it's completed.
