I'm going to pull the pin on doing an LT1 swap in to my 66 Special instead of going to the venerable LSx swap that everyone seems to do now. I'm pretty sure the mounts aren't the same on the frame for the LTx platform vs. the 300 motor that's in it now. Should I just find a set of frame stands for a small block chevelle to drop the LT motor on or is there some other better way? What are the major differences in the frame mounts between the two? Just curious before I start tossing parts together. Hey, I AM staying with an LTx motor......they came in Buicks so I'm kinda staying true!! Thanks
You can ditch the 300 frame stands. They definitely won't work. I don't know if the LS and LT blocks share the same motor mount position but if they do use the Hooker frame stands and AC Delco motor mounts for a 98-02 Camaro/Firebird. Keep in mind an LT (Gen 5)powered vehicle never came with hydraulic power steering and most use a vacuum pump to generate vacuum for the brakes (due to displacement on demand). Do some research to make sure things like oil pans, headers, motor mounts/frame stands, accessory drives are available for a first generation A-body before you get too deep. Not to shamelessly plug Holley/Hooker but I used many of their parts in LS swap and the fit was flawless. Call their tech support and ask them about compatibility between LS and LT swap parts. Good luck.
Why don't you just ditch the Buick and use a Chevy in Chevy concept? Or just do a LS in a VW because its such an awesome combo, super fast and reliable in a super light weight chassis..............At the same time you both can start dating too..........LOL.........
Really? Here’s a thought: if you can’t contribute something stay out of the conversation. You said you worked for DOS. Is that an acronym for Department of State? If so, God help US.
it's not "basically" anything first off. It either is, or is not. The Ltx platform was used for quite a number of years in Roadmaster's and other cars so don't try to feed me that line of horseshit. The particular LTx motor I'm using has a nice set of AFR heads and a small camshaft that will make good power(around 400) for the occasional blast on the street and still do very good for distance touring which is what I want the car to do. The EFI system is proven to be very reliable and dollar for dollar the only thing better would be an LSx motor which sadly, you seem to think of as the scourge of hotrodders everywhere. All I asked was a simple question about motor mounts and the possible similarities between the two. If you have something constructive to say it's great, but don't be like the guys on the Mopar sites I get on for my 69 Dart GTS. They talk so much crap it's almost embarrassing to read. I can't WAIT to sell the Dart because those kind of folks aren't car guys.....they're clans. Oh, and I'm doing a Moser 9" under it too so lets see the extra flames from that! Auntie Em, Auntie Em, the SKY is falling and those big bad hotrodders are doing engine swaps!!! Aaaaaaaaa, SHAT-AP!!!
The LT1 is a great engine for low end power, it's not until the upper RPMs that an LS starts to pull away from it. Still a worthwhile engine swap! It makes complete sense considering the characteristics of Buick V-8's, which are usually the same. Don't be dissuaded by the Negative Nancies...
Bygblok, are you referring to the LT1 used from '92-'97? If you are then you can disregard my response from earlier this morning. I was thinking of the Gen V LT1 now in use in the Corvette.
Why even make a comment if you dont like it??? Pretty easy, dont like what the topic is, dont post in the thread.
BillA, I went with a 95 LT1 because it’s non-obdII and harnesses and tunes are easy to get and do. The 300 that’s in the car runs okay but I prefer the factory efi, roller cam and overdrive offered by newer power. I’m building it so if my wife and I wake up on a Tuesday morning in Florida and decide to drive to Reno for hot August nights we can get in the car and drive it across the country. Plan to do Route 66 and if it goes well it will be a multi-trip power tour car. The rabid responses on here rival those of the Mopar guys. I don’t care how you power stuff to be honest. Power it, drive it, enjoy it.
I owned a '94 Z-28 with the 275 horse version. It was a nice motor. Mate it with a 4L60E and you'll have a nice package. John Lingenfelter built a 383 stroker LT1 and stuffed it in a '95 Roadmaster. 0-60 in less than 5 seconds. If you can still get one a Hypertech Power Programmer works good with that motor. BTW, where are you in Florida? I often thought about taking mine to Hot August Nights. One of these years I'll do it.
Just the same as if you don't put Buick in Buick go post where more than .01% likes it too............On a Chevy , or LS forum.............so there HA! Besides, why does it seems the old brands loyalty and rivalries are lost on you all? I'm defending those old Loyalties and Rivialties.....so eat ya some of that....lol
I've had a couple of cars with a LT1 and they were very good engines. Plenty of torque, sounded great, and got excellent fuel mileage. I think you will be very pleased with it. Good luck with the project and just ignore the negative comments and keep on posting because lots of guys, like myself, enjoy reading about Buicks regardless of what's under the hood. No rivalries here.
Bill I live just north of Pensacola. Hoping to have most of the mechanicals done on this car by mid-summer. Had wanted to power tour it this year but if I go it will be in my 70 Camaro. The 383/700r4 combo in the camaro gets horrible gas mileage but will run well in to the 12’s all day long and cruise 80mph on the highway at 2300rpm with the stereo on. The Buick with be even better because it won’t beat your kidneys out when it sits on bags.
And I love it when these bastard cars come to cars shows and the strip, they get ignored.....Its like sugar on my corn flakes......
I went through 3 LT1 / 4L60e powered RoadMonster Wagons (94-96) back in the day and they cruised the open highway better than anything I've ever owned. Very nice power and will throw down 24-26mpg @ 70-75 mph state after state.
I owned a 94 lt1 Roadmaster wagon for 5 years. Shift kit and 3,73's. Frame let go. Liked it so much I have a 95 lt1 Roadmaster sedan now. Great mileage. Great cruising engine. Plus when u nailed it the a/f ratio goes to 12:7/1. Gm hit the nail on the head back then. Ray
The 95 lt1 is a obd11 btw. Not an obd1. One can reprogram a factory 94 ECM to a 95 and vise versa. 96 is differenr all together. Use a 3;23 gear due to the 3.06 first gear in the trans.. Ray
