What is the recommended carburetor for a Buick 430 running an Edelbrock B4B intake manifold?

I assume Edelbrock right? But can I mount a Q-Jet. I had a spare carb from a 73 CAD 472 but I could not even get 2 holes lined up let alone that carb had bolts and my B4B intake has 4 threaded bolts inside the intake facing up.
    Thanks for reading my post.

Your factory Q jet should bolt right onto the B4B and is the best carb for your engine. I have this set up on my 430

Morning . I'm thinking it's a square bore typical Holley/Edelbrock 4 bolt mount pattern intake ? Or is it a newer 8 bolt spread bore style ?
Anyway , if a square bore then the easiest choice will be a Holley or edebrock carb . No adapter needed . If a spread bore style with 8 mount choices then those carbs or a q-jet should fit also without adapter . A nicely set up q-jet would run great on that . Probably best gas milage of the choices .

If 4 bolt then I would probably use a Holley . Alot of 430 era motor combos used 750-850 cfm range choices .
Edelbrock choice - simple carb , a few adjustments to do , should run fine and be an ok cruiser choice .

The answer is Q-Jet. Always Q-Jet.

early design B4B was square bore --- correct ?
I had one a long time ago , was pretty sure that was it . plus he said he could not get any holes to match up to his 72 caddy carb .
so , if correct then he would need an adapter to mount q-jet . not 100% great choice . I don't recommend them . which led me to my holley/edelbrock comments .

Thanks everybody. This is what I'm working with, sorry for the low resolution picture but my flash is not working on my low battery. Screenshot_20171112-081812.png
Any info on the q-jet I need. What cars and years had them. Thinking of going to a carb exchange or the junk yard and use the cad 472 carb as a core.

I bought this engine with no carb.

Either use a Holley on that intake or sell/swap it and go with the spread bore and a Qjet, ideally a ‘71-‘74 850 cfm Buick carb set up by one of the gurus here. Do not buy a parts store reman; they’re crap. The Eddy isn’t a bad carb, but they’re not the best choice. (If you own one, try it, but don’t buy one if you don’t). If you swap intakes, see if the Caddy carb will bolt down (not sure about the choke nor the fuel inlet) and try it.

yes , what PBR said about the generic q-jet rebuilds . ken or mark on here are a good starting point for q-jet estimates and questions . always good reviews .
if you do have a little carb to manifold interference a 1/2" or 1" spacer ( spacer , not adapter ) will clear it up normally .
and if you are trying to use an OEM cold air GS hood the B4B will position carb incorrectly . the performer intake will position carb correctly and accept a q-jet . a spacer may raise carb and create a problem . if not using any of those options just go with what feels best to ya .
research , ask questions , common sense , do your homework .

Some of the B4Bs were drilled/tapped to accept the wider bolt pattern of the Q-jet and the boss can be die-grinded open to accept the Q-jet without use of a spacer. I know of at least one B4B cut open this way that is probably still at-large and working just fine.

Thanks PBR400 for the info and contacts. I'll stay away from parts store remanufactured carbs.

DEADMANSCURVE thanks, I might all ready be creating problems with clearance issues by putting this 430 in a 65 skylark but I don't mind going the scoop route. I'm not gonna run a GS air cleaner but I would love to if I come across one. What's the difference/intent betweeen performer vs B4B intake?

BadBrad hey that's good info to know. With that known I'll buy the carb 1st and see if I'll even need the spacer. When you grind the intake to fit the carb then you won't be able to ever go back to another carb?

Briz & BigPig455 you guys got me sold!!!

    Thanks everyone.

Morning . When I mentioned the GS cold air hood that was if you were running a 70 era car - common . On a 65 no such hood .
The performer intake positions the carb correctly to line up with hood opening . The b4b centers the carb better between cylinders and is supposed to be advantageous in terms of flow and distribution .
For your use I would probably use the b4b . The new b4b's are dual pattern I think - Holley and Qjet mount patterns .
TA has mounts to install bbb in 65 frame .
Let us know how it goes .

I've seen 65 hoods that had the GS scoops grafted into them that looked awesome. Just because the factory didnt do it dont mean it cant be done. Trust me, I know a little about this stuff.

Thanks for the frame mount info. I didn't know. When I bought the Lark the seller had a sbc350 mated to a th400. He reworked the original moter mount position.. I'll upload a pic later but I talked him out of selling the Buick with no motor/trans for cheaper.. Thanks alot man

65 with a fabricated GS hood sounds nice. Briz what does the GS air cleaner improve?

Cool factor! On a GS its said that the scoops in reality create a low pressure area and limits the air flow. On my set up with the cowl hood the scoops are up higher and probably work as they should forcing air into the breather. I can tell by the trails in the dust and watching water beads on the hood.

Depends only on how much grinding is done. As mentioned elsewhere some of the B4Bs were manufactured for dual pattern. When I bought mine it was blatantly obvious this was a hot-rodders option; the carb boss was shaped to accept a spreadbore if material was removed. If all you do is grind out enough to open the plenum for the spreadbore it's probably still fine for a squarebore; but very easy to confirm before you go cutting. I'm pretty sure I had the same question at the time - THIRTY years ago. The aluminum cuts fast. If your burr is not specifically for aluminum you'll need to use WD40 to keep the aluminum from jamming up the cutting edges.
