When u guys have installed a new rear main seal (72 350v8), has anyone rotated the seal (top & bottom) a few degrees so that the seal ends are not inline with the block/pan?

Sean has also given the Ford 460 rear seal number to use instead of the rope style.
...and yes, rotate it about an 1/8"-1/4".

I will see if I can find the part number for you...

    Ford part number: E9AZ-6701-A

    or, D2VE-6701-AA

    or, NAPA number: NGA JV618

I did that on my GN and it hasn't leaked in 15 years.

Yep same here. Used the ford 460 seal slightly offset. Zero leaks

I did that the second time. Got the seal from T/A. Just make sure you turn it with the right side out, it will definitely leak if you don't, I found out the hard way haha.

The Ford seal NAPA sells is the exact seal T/A sells, has the same # printed on it. My first one was the NAPA part. So far it seems to be sealed up, only driven it less than 100 miles since installing it.

JW has a thread on here with very detailed tips on installation as well as some other threads I checked out.

I already have received the seal from T/A Performance. Just waiting until April 1 or thereabouts to pull the engine. I have an engine man who is going to install the rear seal and others.
    Tkx, guys.

I tried researching and ordering the part numbers above with no luck. Was placing an order with Summit racing anyway and added this seal. Part number is close to the above and is supposed to be for a Ford 460. Is the correct Ford rear main seal for my 72 350? (see pic). thanks

The first seal I got was from NAPA. Don't have the number, but it was what they sell for a Ford 460. Unfortunately my buddy installed it backwards, and I had to do it over. Ordered the replacement seal from T/A. It was the same seal as the NAPA, even had the same numbers molded into the seal. So far this one is sealing fine.

Is there a specific year of 460 to ask for, or are they all the same?

All 460s were the same afiak. I asked for one from a 94 f250 with a 460 and it fit in my just fine. I don't remember which way the lip has to face though. There is a right and wrong way to install it.

You want this what looks like a cross section of the seal, > facing the inside of the engine.

When we pulled the engine a few weeks ago, I found two noticeable leaks - the cam plug and the engine pan drain plug. Turns out I had to file the surface where the drain plug screwed into the oil pan.
I am not so sure the rear main (not exactly by the book) was actually leaking but we replaced it. I thought it was now leaking. So pulled the engine today and placed it on the stand, filled the crankcase with oil and will leave it there a couple of days to see it there are any leaks.
If I find the leak then we have developed a new procedure to r/r the seal.

Yes all 460 use the same seal and that is what TA sells as well but they add the rubber chunks and pins to fill in the cavity beside the rear main cap. My latest modification to the rear main instal is to put a bit of "the right stuff sealant" into the cavity where the rubber chunks/blocks go and then put the blocks in and lastly the pins . The pins expand the rubber chunks so they fit tight but I find adding the sealant beforehand makes them seal up well. I know over using sealant is bad however I have had hood luck with this and it's easy to remove any excess sealant that squirts out.

I have a thread about this, just search "rear main instructions" and it shout pop up.

Good point Sean, I did forget to mention T/A supplies the rubber fillers and pins in their kit. They show it in the pic on their link I posted earlier. Also I will add that T/A's kit was about $10 cheaper than NAPA's seal alone. They ship fast too.

Sean's thread was a big help on install also. JW has a thread on rear main seal that helps with install tips.

I for the life of me could not get the rubber side pieces in the cap in the parts store kit, so I said screw it. Used black RTV and it never leaked.

U can sand down the side pieces according to T/A performance instructions.

I have cut the rubber chunks off flush using a razor blade...

I sanded the rubber blocks down a little and installed them with a thin coat of Right Stuff sealant, then drove the pins in.
