Sudden tranny issues

After playing with a GN today I ran into the following issues with my 200-4R stage 1 tranny.
Slippage now occurs when downshifting into passing gear, when going slow and when upshifting from a start (like the tranny can't find a gear to get in)
Slippage and some shudder now occurs in reverse
Engine now has run on when turning off which I just rid of by going to 93 octane
Now I have a buzzing noise from tranny when in park
No puddles of fluid or temp issues but something is wrong here, any ideas?
I am two months out of warranty on the unit!

The only thing I can think of is that maybe when you went to full throttle the TV cable went out of adjustment... I have seen that before. By the sounds of it though the damage is already done... I would take it to the shop and hopefully they will still take care of you being this close to your warranted period.

Builder advised I am out of warranty.
    TV cable looks OK
Builder suggested filter may have clogged or came loose based on the tranny noise and shifting issues I explained.
I guess I now know what I'm doing this weekend before I run to a tranny shop.
Hopefully considering that as soon as it happened I came home real easy and didn't drive that far maybe I got lucky!
The real kicker here is that I finally had the motor and tranny working perfectly together which was NO easy task! WHAT A BUMMER

If anyone knows the part number for the extra longer filter for a 200-4R tranny please advise!

    Thanks!

You really need to press the issue with the trans shop! I am pretty sure that if you are persistent enough they will help you out! Offer to pay for the parts if they can do the labour for free... At very least they should offer a free diagnosis and u dont have anything to loose by having them rip into it at this point.

    I already tried that, NG
I had issues in the beginning which I posted and got a song and dance. At this point I’m going to drop the pan and see what happens. If there is an issue I will have it dealt with locally (shop is about 2hrs away) and cut my losses.

What does the fluid look/smell like?
I use a bottom feed 700r4 with a stock pan. Not ideal, but my budget didn't allow for a deep pan and cool bottom feeder setup.

If you are handy and have the space, I'd do your own overhaul. Get the ck performance manual, a copy of the atsg manual and put in a call to David Husek. I did mine and it is working well so far.

Fluid smells and looks fine. I have an extra deep aluminum pan with drain plug so I intend to drain then drop the pan this weekend. Maybe I will get lucky and the filter fell out as I can’t see how it would have gotten clogged with so little miles on the rebuild. Then again anything is possible. If I find it’s the filter and it’s a short 2004R one I will swap it out for the longer 700R4 version. I have been told the unit takes Dextron 1V or better if a refill is in order. Is this correct?

My son had so much trouble with 200 4R in his GN that he finally gave up on them. One of them acted and sounded just like you mention. TV cable set correctly. He kept breaking front pumps, and paid about $2000 for one of them. He went to switch pitch 400 trans until I stole it for my convertible!!

All Dexron is backwards compatible so just get the current Dexron6.

These 200r4's are not that hard to work on. Hard to say what broke, but not that hard to dig into on the bench. The buzz is the front pump most likely. If that is all that wrong front pump then not too hard to change, but before you get too far you need to get a gauge on it and post all the pressures. More help likely on the TB board.

If anyone knows the make and part number for a quality extra longer trans filter for a 200-4R (700-R4 type) tranny please advise. I would like to have one on hand if I am so fortunate that my issues are due to mine falling out and it is the standard size.

    Thanks!

This is the 700R4 filter. Is there a longer one?

This one fits the 4L60E, not sure if that is the same as a 700R4?

I was told the 700 R4 filter is a bit longer than the 200 4R OEM but will work and is better with a deep pan . However, I do not know if that is true as I have never seen them side by side. I tried researching for some specs with negative results.

If you go to www.rockauto.com and look up various applications, they have pictures of the parts. So looking up an 87 GN, this is the 2004R filter,

Looking up a 1992 Chevy pickup with a 350, this is the 700R4 filter,

    http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=5895384&cc=1031285

They look similar to me. If anything, the 2004R filter looks a bit longer.

My bad, it was just the tube neck length I was referring to. I was gong to have them pull both at the store and see if there is any real difference in tube length to speak of.

IF the builder is the one that put the short filter in there he would be getting it back. There is a difference between out of mileage/time warranty and someone that screwed something up. IF they screwed it up they should be held accountable. Of course if you put it in that is a different story. The best way to cure this problem is to build your own trans. The biggest deal is making sure you have all of the clearances right and that you get all the right parts. Oh and being able to get the lip seals in without wanting to throw the piston through the wall.

When you drain look for a small piece of spring. The over pressure setup is a spring n ball held by a pin in the pump. The pin rubs the spring and breaks a coil off resulting in low pressure relief and the buzzing sound. A guru told me to put a washer between the spring and pin to prevent the spring damage.

The 700r4 filter picks up from the bottom. The 2004r filter has its pick up on the top. With the bottom pick up the inlet stays submuerged much easier than the top feed.
If you do go to the 700r4 be sure to do something with the pressure switch so it doesn't ground on the filter body.

I put some heat shrink tube on there to prevent it from grounding on the filter body.

Your builder needs to make good or be outed. That low pressure is probably causing your problems. Let us know.
