So after work yesterday(and a LOT of joking about how 'slow' my boss's cars are) we took my 65 Skylark 2bbl with a ST300 and 2.71's out against his 48 Pontiac with 70 Grand Prix running gear. His car has a 400 4bbl with a turbo 400 and 2.73's. Our car weigh about the same. I didn't expect any chance against his car but thought what the heck, I'll give it what I've got. So we started from a roll at about 15-20(first gear for me, bottom of second for him) after we got out of town and stayed in it until shortly after I shifted into second, maybe 90. I definitely lost, but was very proud of how my car ran. He got the hit slightly, but I stayed with him through most of first. He started to slightly walk away from me as I hit the top of first. When I hit second I started to reel him back in, but he let off just after he hit third. When we got back to town I asked him how far into the throttle he was, he said he didn't even hit the secondaries :eek2:; I felt like one whipped pony:laugh:. I thought he just touched the secondaries, but just barely had them cracked :Do No:, but I'll take his word for it. All in all I was happy giving up 100 cubic inches and some gear. I really did win overall though. The win was getting him to go out and actually play around and seeing him have some fun :TU:.

P.S. This was kind of a warm up. He has a fiberglass bodied Model T truck with a slightly worked over engine from a 65 GTO and a Muncie M-22 and 3.55 gears. That car should run low 10's when hooking and healthy. I want to race it(or at least try to:laugh:) when I get my car close to done.

I hope you mean low 10's in the 1/8.bruno.

Didn't even hit the secondaries at 90-100 mph? Ok. Trust me, he had it hammered at one time or another. Nobody races at part throttle.

fun story. my question to him would be WHY is a model T powered by 65 GTO driveline. That's TWO great pontiacs without their drivetrain, I hope they were both wrecked and un-saveable.

X2. That old "I didn't open the secondaries" thing is just trying to be cocky. I've heard it a million times and have yet to see it. But if you guys had fun with a little friendly rivalry then that's all good.

Without anyone in the car it only weighs just over 1200 lbs, and an engine that should put out around 275-300 to the wheels.

The Model T was put together in like 70 or 71, so he just went to a junkyard and pulled the engine out of a GTO that had been wrapped around a tree. The Grand Prix he bought in 72 and drove until the early 80's when it got T-boned and wasn't worth the money to fix. Luckily there was no major frame damage and I don't know if he had the 48 sitting or found the 48 shortly after the wreck, but salvaged most of the stuff that wasn't the body(steering column, engine, trans, gauges, rack, frame, rear end).

Come on,you have stated that his car has the same weight as your Skylark,my 64 Special weight was 3200 pd with a SBO,this was before I put the Buick motor in it.Now you state that that car only weights 1200 pd's !You must be a joker.Bruno.

He was talking about 2 different cars, the 1200 lb car is the Model T truck.

The car he raced was a '48 Pontiac with a 1970 Grand Prix drive train in it.

Reminds me of a local guy with an iron headed big block Camaro who claimed he could lift the front wheels. I told him, "Not without a floor jack", so he tried many times and failed. It did do nice burnouts, though. Some people just don't know when to keep their mouths shut.
