For a long time the car for me was my first real car a 69 Mach 1. I bought it from the original owner and drove it while I was in ther Army. After that I married and she could not drive a stick so off it went. Years later a friend found a Mach 1 for me that turned out to be a Mavrick  So I gave him a few mags with pics of a 69 Mach 1. 3 months later he calls me with a lead he was looking at a garage that was falling down and needed to be torn down, problem was a friend had a car inside so it had he to wait till the car was moved. Well he told me it was a blue 69 Mach 1 and even said it on the side. I decided that I had to know. I got directions and found it to be 4 blocks from my rented house. I got to the garage and sure enough the doors were secured but you could see it through the hole in the wall where the missing bricks had fallen out:TU: Well I had to know if it was for sale. It was a twin to my old car. But my old car had a 69 Mach 1 hot wheels car super glued to the dash. After many days of calling I finally got a hold of the owner. Sorry not for sale. After the car moved and went 30 miles form me but I kept the number. I called every week or so. Finally he relented. He had 2 of these cars. I went to the bank to get the agreed 2500.00, hired a tow truck and loaded up some tools. On arriving at the storage area I find that Denny has a very rough but running orange and ugly Mach 1 and the blue one. he immediately wanted me to look at the orange car. I only wanted to look at the blue car. Then he hit me with the news, he would sell the orange car but not the blue car. He really did not want me to even look at the blue car. I did and you probably guessed, it had the hot wheel impression on the dash the little Mach one was removed but where it was glued was still evident. I told Denny that the deal was this, if he wanted to keep it fine but if he ever sold it to anyone else I would hunt him down and hurt him  I left with no car. I had sold the 68 fastback I was working on to finance this one. 1 1/2 years later with a call every month to keep my foot in the door Denny relented and sold me my old car back. Long story I know, but keep the faith you never know when the time will come so be ready. Good luck

    AND ???!!!???

Where is the car now ? certainly not in your signature :Do No:

I too always had a soft spot for the 69 Mach1 - first REAL scary ride I ever got in a muscle car, or any car for that matter. I was 16 and a bus boy at some restaurant .. the head cook was this cool dude with the soup'd Mach1. He gave me a ride home that night which was more sideways than straight ahead...

... Changed my life and the color of my skivvies in one fell swoop

That car was sold to join the Buick community. I still think that body is the best looking of any car ever made

If this thread was the reason you got this car back, that's absolutely unbelievable and also a testament to how invaluable this website really is.

Wouldn't have happened without this thread and the gracious help of the GS community. This car has many interesting, and almost unbelievable, stories that go along with it. But that is for another time. I am delighted to have it back.

Learned something here too - Had been trying to figure out what the "Z" on the trim tag meant - Duane said he'd seen it but even he didn't know what it was for, nor did Wayne Roberts.

Apparently, it's for non recommended color combinations. Could be for other things too (?), but the few I've see were all oddball color combos:

    1) Sherwood Green w/Brown top & Burnished Saddle interior (2 of 'em)
    2) Seamist Green w/Sherwood Green painted top & black interior
    3) Jim's newly reunited Burgandy Mist w/Brown top & Burnished Saddle interior

A friend has a Seamist green / white top / white bucket seat 70 GS455 convertible. This car has a Z prefix to the interior code, and the only reason I can think of why, is that it was originally a column shift car. There could be something else going on that I'm not aware of.

I'd like an opportunity to sit down with a salesman from back in the day and see what the hangups were when the customer wanted what they wanted but the dealer pushed back.

I feel like it'd be a very interesting conversation.

According to Rich Johns in another post about your car, the "Z" was for a non-recommended interior color. There's a red/white top/white interior "Z" car on the '70 Stage 1 Registry which I thought was odd too. Theres one like it for sale now & I think it looks pretty good, but maybe Buick had an issue with the white top/white interior? The 5 on '70 Stage 1 registry are:

    1) Z181 R26-26 Bright Blue (Riviera only) w/dark Blue interior
    2) Z189 34-34 Med. Turquoise Metallic w/Burnished Saddle interior
    3) Z185 75-A Red w/white top & white interior
    4) Z188 28-A Stratomist Blue w/white top & Burnished Saddle interior
    5) Z189 48-E Sherwood Green w/ Sandalwood top & Burnished Saddle interior

When I originally bought it, in the late 1980's, it was part of a 2 car purchase. The seller had for some reason started removing parts from it to fix up (I refuse to say restore) the other car, which was a White Stage 1 TH-400 car. That is where the front clip, and some of the interior went. He had sold the original M-21 Muncie to a local friend who had installed it in his '69 Camaro, so I figured it was history. As luck would have it though, I was able to contact this friend who told me the transmission was currently out of the car for clutch replacement, and he was willing trade it for another Muncie 4-speed. I was more than happy to do just that. More to come.......

Very cool story! Most guys with the "one I should never have sold" stories don't get this opportunity! Looking forward to the continuing saga of this car.
