Not sure how much room there is on the other side of the radiator for the outlet, but it seems like if you relocated it to the other side,it looks like there is a lot more room to run a hose? Unless you don't have your top mounted driverside power steering pump on yet? If that is the case then.................disreguard.

you answered your own question there Derek.

I have a double pass aluminum radiator in my '64 rivi and the upper outlet interferes with my power steering pump.. Solution? Manual steering. for now, anyway :Dou:

Well,,, I rounded up 2 of the 90 deg. elbows that are made of copper.... I will check out how they will work vs how the black iron ones work....looks like I may come up with a better solution here.... but what kind of semi-gloss black paint will stick to copper???? aint gonna have corroded copper green radiator hose on my riv....:Brow:
Where is Codman when I need him???? airplanes have all kinds of tricks they do in situations like this.....:Brow:
Guess I could sit down and whittle one out of wood,,,, cypress maybe ?????

Not too many liquid-cooled light planes these days, Doc. I'm sure that something could be fabricated. It would certainly be from Aluminum - weight, you know. You could look up "Aircraft Spruce and Specialty" and see if they have anything that you could use. Somewhere in their catalog they have a page on the properties of various alloys of aluminum. You are very creative. I know that you will find a solution. Until then, what you have looks great. I love huge radiators!

I think mine's a Stromberg 1 bbl updraft. Airplane carburetors are mounted below the engine for obvious reasons. Interestingly, in my application (180 hp Lycoming) there is a diffuser mounted in the intake manifold. It was (past tense intentional) made of a very soft grade of aluminum. The reason for the soft grade is so that if dislodged, it will pass through the engine without destroying anything. My airplane is on it's second diffuser. Nuff said?

thanks, Rob,,,,i have already picked up 2 of the 90 deg. copper elbows....to redo the radiator end of the upper hose....I think that I can refine it some....hey, guys, what kind of primer will stick to copper???? or can i turn it black some other way???

John,, years ago I took a tour of the fire station at Hobby airport and my friend showed us the fire truck and it had a huge lycoming engine in it....it would actually ''lay rubber'' from a dead stop... he did it for us....:Brow::Brow:

CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION.......

I started the car up today and discovered a gas leak,,,, it was coming from the seam in the fuel filter.... I dont know if I tightened the u bolt up too much and broke the seal in the filter at the middle seam,,,, or the filter just leaked..... I suspect that I was eat up with the dumb you know what and crushed the filter with the tension on the bolt....:Dou: so.... if you guys go this route , dont tighten that u bolt more than just good and snug.... I would use self locking nuts on it so they dont come loose from vibration.... then it should work just fine.... there is a slot cut into the bracket so that the middle flange locates the filter and with the u bolt snugged up , it will not go anywhere.... or leak....

yeah, Bulldog, any time you modify a vehicle, you need to double check everything afterward... most of the time you have modify your modification :laugh: I went last night and got a new filter and will replace it this morning....
I did start the engine up yesterday and set the timing... still got to warm it up and set the carb and check out the other mods with the engine running......:pray:

Earlier this week I watched two videos on the board of two cars catching fire and burning up. For the Roadmaster, I'm going to get a battery cut off switch and another fire extinguisher.

Well,,,,, yesterday,,,, I fired that puppy up.... set the timing, and discovered a vacuum leak under the carb,,,, took it off to see what the problem was,,, and found that the countersunk bolts that holds the adapter to the intake were not going down into the plate far enough.... Bulldog, remember what I said about modifying the mod....???:Brow: So,,, I took them out and with my trusty bench grinder, I took them down enough to clear.... and that took care of that problem....
As the engine was warming up, I checked the fluids, watched the clearances of all the new stuff I had installed , and finally after about 30 minutes of running time set the idle screws and the throttle plate angle on that fine, new, 1st class holley that John wishes he had....:laugh: and while all that stuff was going on , the engine quit.... :Brow: i had just looked at the gas gauge in the car and it said that I had a 8th of a tank.... I looked at the fuel pressure gauge and it said , zero,,,, dang, brand new gage and it is already broke,,,, jest my luck,,,, :Brow: mutter, mutter,,, then,,,, it occured to me ,,, this sucker is out of gas.... the gas gauge speaks with forked tongue.... sure enough , poured some gas in and the pressure came up and she fired right up again....:laugh:
After I got the engine running right , I put the air cleaner on and tried the accellerator pedal,,,it stuck to the floor,,,, not good,,:Brow: started checking,,,, it seems that the bottom of the air cleaner was rubbing on the linkage that I had made up... so, I had to rebend the rod to clear the air cleaner.... guys, always, always double and triple check stuff that you modify.... I had checked the linkage for binding BEFORE I put the air cleaner on and it worked fine,,, but hung up after I put the assembly on the carb....had I hit passing gear, the throttle would have hung wide open....
Well, I still have a few details to do , but we will put the hood back on today and this project will pretty well be done.... I hope the hood goes on good and fits right and locks right , I am paranoid about the hood blowing up on a car....after me and my uncle were running a 100 mph in a 49 ford and the hood blew up,,, the fool looked at me and said, ''I went blind'',,, I said,'' no you did not, I can see you and you can see me.''... we got stopped and took the waded up hood off and just left it there....

    "I went blind"

The Nissan pick up company car I drive at work makes me nervous. At any speed over 30mph the hood has waves like the ocean.

I was driving a '69 Chevy kingswood wagon when the motor mount broke. The engine torqued up, and the throttle stuck opened. I took out a 100ft of chain link fence before it ran into a pile of leaves with the wheels spinning....

All went well , the hood went back on and did not have any problems ...took the car to town to get a pc valve, and while it was sitting at the parts store, a crowd gathered around,,,well,,, a small crowd:laugh::laugh: ohing and ahing,, i thought I was never going to get away... kind of had a one car, car show.... but most of the comments were along the lines of ''it looks factory'',,, when i told them that I had fabbed a lot of the stuff....specially the air cleaner and the radiator/a/c/cover..... the car ran good and cool,,, right on the thermostat to be exact...which is what i was after.....:) :) :)

Chevys of that vintage had an engine mount problem. GM offered cable kits that would keep the engine from torquing as yours did. I'll bet I installed 50 sets of them.

Doc - glad you've got it running and all's well, I had to laugh at the mod-the-mod stories - I spend more time fixing my fixes than anything else. And I have that "just can't leave well enough alone" gene too......"Striving to better, oft we mar what is well" - it's on my family crest in latin!!!!!

My curse is still in place, I took a good running tranny in my 65 had to screw with it, now it's probably gonna have to come down and apart over the winter. And that will teach me absolutely nothing!
