425 Dyno Results

    Just picked up my rebuilt 425 engine, built by AMS Racing Inc.
    Dynoed at 409hp & 540lb/ft of torque.
    Stock compression, TA 276 roller cam, mildly ported heads with 2" intake & 1.5 exhaust valves, 825 cfm Barry Grant carb.
    Does this sound on par for a decent streetable engine?
    Seemed to be all done by 5000 rpm

    That seems very good for a mild build - Lots of torque!

    Should be a great street machine! I agree it is on the mild side for h.p. these days. Seems like everybody has 600!

    Sounds very good considering how restrictive the heads are. Even ported they could use more flow.
    To be Fair, you can't really consider todays HP numbers abtainable from the other V8's that have a bunch of aftermarket heads available.
    A 400+ Horse Streetable 425 would be Awesome in my book and "64 Riviera!

    im not the expert but my 455 was built with stage one heads , 9.5 to1 , ta 290-94h cam no porting and dynod at 410/538 real closemarty..........gonna be a lot of fun,

    Sounds pretty dang good to me, the nail numbers always remind me of a diesel, way more torque than hp! Interested in the answers to everyones questions...

    Love to know the cam specs and springs you used:TU: Never get the HP numbers that the engines with after market heads
    get. Mabey someday we get a performance 1x4 intake. Man that sounds like a lot of fun Ron:TU:

    Any time you can get north of 400 hp out of a normally-aspirated Nailhead, your engine builder and tuner done good!

    Answers to questions: One really big check $$$$

    1. TA roller rockers

    2. Chevy LS 1 beehive valve springs

    3. Chevy 11/32 stem 2.02 intake valves with bronze valve guides (shortened)

    3. Chevy 1.50 exhaust valves

    4. TA 276-82RH hydraulic roller cam: lift .501 intake & .520 exhaust duration 276 intake & 282 exhaust grind #54134

    5. Forged Pistons .030 oversized stock compression custom made

    6. mildly ported heads, combustion chambers and intake with center divider removed (doc mod)

    7. 825cfm Barry Grant carb with 2" four hole spacer for dyno (going with FAST EZ-EFI)

    409 horsepower @ 4600 rpms (average hp 398.5)
    539 lb/ft of torque @ 3400rpms (average torque 488.7)


    Getting installed a 1955 Buick Special with upgraded chassis. This will be a totally streetable car that my wife will be driving!!!

    Any idea on the @ .050 duration or lobe separation angle of the cam?

    Cam card was a photo copy with T/A on the top of the page and the data was hand written.
    It's at my office I'll get the numbers tomorrow?

    Just curious what everyone else is getting from their engines.

    Try getting those numbers out of a normally aspirated DIESEL!

    Sounds like a neat engine, with fantastic torque. Another 425 going into a mid 50's Buick. Cool.

    Please post some more pictures of the project. Im building the same for a 56 so real interested in your details.

    thanks. i had 401 hp @ 4650 rpm and 503 torque @ 3500 rpm, on a superflow dyno. your numbers are GREAT, dont think anyone has better numbers. like yours mine is very streetable. would like your cam duration at .050. :TU:

    Whenever you get to it Ron. I think this is the first roller cam'd Nailhead that we've actually seen dyno numbers for, hence my curiosity. Plus your killer results peaked my interest as well. Your engine builder did a fantastic job to get those kind of numbers with what seems like a fairly mild. Your numbers are definitely higher than most of, if not all of the past Nailhead dyno results that have been posted on the board, so you've got an awesome power plant on your hands. Congrats! :TU:

    By the way, I'm jealous of your wife! :laugh:
