I need to replace the frame bushings on my 66 Special Station Wagon. Does somebody make them for a wagon, do I use a 4-door kit (if they exist), El-Camino kit, or am I out of luck? o No:
Yeah, that's a tough one. Kits with exact reproductions don't exist yet. A generic Chevelle kit should work. You'll at least need the convertible kit for the extra front bushings. Ground Up, www.ss396.com has a bushing kit with a good hardware kit. You should call them and see if a ElCamino kit would be better for you. www.oldcarstuff.com sells bushings separately if you need some individual bushings. Some are duplicates of the originals, if you want 99.5% correct pieces.
The ss396 ones are all the same and are very small and the cradle mount are smaller than stock too. I can dig some pics up if you would like. My 67 Special had 4 or 5 different size mounts. Ray
Thanks for the offer. I just found out that I may not need them after all. I had a body man come to my house and look over the car and he said to leave the bushing alone. He said they were still "rubbery" and I would probably be opening up a mess I didn't need. I'm supposed to have another guy come by in a few weeks. I'll get his opinion. On another note, when I told him I planned to have the car media blasted, he said to save my money. The car was last painted in '83. His explanation was that if the paint was going to let go or crack, it would have done it by now. He recomended using a good sealer primer over the existing paint. I wait for the second opinion on that, too.
Not openiung up a mess usually means he does not want to deal with it. Look them over yourself. See if the rubber has disintegrated or if metal is crusty then they need changing.
I checked the bushings next to the radiator, and they are still pliable. I haven't checked the rest, and I'm still wainting for my second opinion.
