Congrats Mark! My younger brother lives in Columbus but he's an Olds guy so I wouldn't associate with him if I were you. ;)

Just kidding, he's got a '64 fullsized Olds that he cherishes.

Glad you're back in business again, I don't ever want to know what that feeling is like.

Glad to hear you found something. I'm also in IT, and can offer a few suggestions. Call every contract company you can, get them your resume and BUG THEM. Call them, and email them at least once a week. Don't limit yourself to any one. Work with ALL of them. There are jobs, but companies are still being selective. The new budgets are going to be spent soon. Just wait it out. ;)

    RACF stuff?

Can I ask you some questions, and I don't want it to come across as condescending. I can PM you if you'd like to take it out of here.

I've always wondered about this. The guys in our mainframe group at the bank I work for are in their middle 50's, and older. A coworker and I thought that surely this might be a high demand area in a few years. We asked the manager of this dept, bacically "do you see yourself having a staffing problem in say, 5 years?". He couldn't see any problems. I don't see any new people entering this area of IT. It's not as exciting as maybe security, or network, but i don't see companies rushing out to replace these mainframes.

The place I'm working at now is phasing out their mainframes by the end of this year.

Hmm.. I work at a bank, and we just threw a boatload of money at IBM the last few years. It runs, it never goes down, and it's basically maintenence free. I don't think we'll ever get rid of our mainframes.

That's great. I think every organization is unique. It probably depends on who is running the IT shop...

I can tell you the federal government is not getting rid of mainframes anytime soon.

Our teams don't deal too much with the security side (RACF) we are mostly applications support and data transfer right now. But that could change any time.. gotta love our government.

Hey Mark I've been watching this thread and I think you should seriously consider branching out on your own. It's a scary thought but if the Lord is in your corner you can't go wrong. I struggled with the idea of going on my own also in 1999 and took the plunge and failed misserably. In 2004 I went to work for a local contractor and was making darn good money for this part of the country. Then the cancer thing hit and I was left hanging in the air but fortunately the company I was working for 2 days after I was diagnosed called my wife and told her I had a job as soon as I was able to return to work. I've been in the construction trade for most of my life and the job I had was an Iron Worker. Well after the cancer thing I was unsure if I could return to work because of the loss of weight I had due to the condition. I went from 228 lbs. in Feb. 2005 to at last weigh in a couple of weeks ago to 135 lbs. I went back to work in August of 2007 and worked until December 6 and had to lay off because I could not hang anymore. I have not contacted my employer to tell him whether I can come back to work or not yet but am trying to get my previous busines back up and running. It is a Victorian Restoration business and I have a complete milwok shop. Not much call for that kind of thing around here but I love that kind of work. I do carpentry work and that has been helping somewhat. I have since sold my 65 Skylark and now the says that we will probably have to get rid of the Harley. It was bad enough to get rid of one dream ie. the Buick and now the second the Harley. It don't get much worse than that. I've been to the top and back 3 times and this wil be the 4th time there. So if you are afraid to take the plunge into a self owned business don't fear! Pray about it and take the plunge and the Lord will direct you on your way. You can do it if you just take a step in that direction. Good luck in whatever you do and prayers are with you! :TU:

Tim, I really appreciate your confidence. My biggest concern with going to work on my own is insurance coverage. No one will cover a diabetic (me) and/or someone with Lupus (my wife). We tried when I got laid off in October.

Now when my wife starts working after she graduates, I might take the plunge because she can cover the family with insurance from her employer, much like I'm doing now.
